—Ron POV—
"I'll do it." I swallowed hard, looking right at Hermione. "I'll go back to the forest and find the others. See if they're alive." I took in a steadying breath. "If anyone else is willing to volunteer, they can."
Ginny stepped forward. "I'll go with you. I can help check if they're alive. I can teach you to look for a pulse, too."
"I'll join." George stepped forward.
With a simple nod, the three of us turned to leave. I was promptly tackled into a hug by Hermione.
"Be careful out there." I smiled, moving to wipe a tear from her cheek.
"I will. Don't worry. You stay with Harry."
George took my left hand, and Ginny took my right. Soon, we landed on the grounds of the Forbidden Forest again.
The sky was a rich, beautiful blue. Birds were chirping and there was a slight breeze. The thick canopy above held spring leaves despite the chill that surrounded us. I felt a slight squeeze of the hand from George.
"Let's get searching."
"Yeah." I pushed down the dread that threatened to take me over. "Let's get searching."
Ginny took that moment to teach us each how to properly find a pulse in a body. She gestured to the side of her neck and to her wrists using her index and middle fingers.
"It's worth checking everyone. Even the Death Eaters... "
George and I nodded. "If we need to find each other, We're to throw up sparks. Okay? And if we find anyone alive, we send them over to Bill and Hagrid. They're waiting to process them."
It took almost no time to find the first body. Kingsley's skin was an ashy grey. There was a pool of blood coming from a gash on his side. I grimaced. Is it worth checking this body? I watched as the blood seeped through the cracks and crevices of the leaves and twigs by my feet, compelling me to step backward.
He was a good man. Guided by fear, maybe, overturned by the power play of politics, absolutely, but I couldn't help mourning. He made the world a better place. He overturned prejudiced laws, he fought with us, for us.
With a sigh, I took out my wand, transporting him to where Hagrid and Bill waited to account for them and perform the necessary procedures to set up another funeral.
Merlin, another funeral. The thought unsettled my stomach. I thought about the fallen fifty. That was fourteen years ago, yet it came much too soon, just like this one.
When Kingsley's body faded away, I continued onward, pointedly ignoring the pool of blood left behind. The death of a wizard could've- should've- been less gruesome. It was certainly possible.
The next body made me let out some mix between a gasp and a whimper. I had to blink several times, looking away, regaining myself. I must've seen wrong. Breath caught in my throat, I slowly turned back to them, all color draining from my face. No, not... I can't. No.
Check for a pulse! My mind was reeling. Quickly, I shuffled to the floor, taking Charlie's wrist in my hand. Please, please, be alive. Be okay, please.
My hands were shaking as I looked into the distance, unable to bring myself to see his face.
Ginny's voice rang in my head. "If at first, you can't find it, you can try feeling around and adding more pressure."
