"You should come tonight Lex, one of the best fighters in town is going to be there and there are rumors he would like to challenge you on the ring"
"You know I don't fight anymore Mike. Look I'm just getting out of work and I need to get home for dinner. My mom told me we were going to celebrate tonight so I can't. If you hear anything about it text me and I'll see what I can do If I'm not passed out yet." Without another word I disconnect the call and put my phone back in my back.
I make sure everything is properly closed and the alarms are on before closing the front door of the Atelier. Just as I turn to walk down the stairs, I see my mom leaning against her car smiling up at me and before I know it she is taking me in a bear hug.
"My baby I'm so proud of you." I can tell by her voice that her eyes are filled to the brim with unshed tears of pride.
She lets go of me caressing my face with her hands like i'm her world, making me smile.
"What are you doing here mom ? I though you were at home cooking a feast to celebrate like we planned." I ask her as we make our way to the car.
"Well I only told we were going to celebrate I never mentioned how silly. Come on put your seat belt on so I can start the car."
As soon as the click from the seat belt is heard my mom starts the car, while I find a radio station that has a music to our taste. Not long into skipping radio stations I find one where Vivir mi vida is playing so I turn up the volume and start singing to the song and not long into it my mom starts to sing along too.
After the music changed I put the volume back down a bit so we can talk. I told mom all about my day and how everything went with the opening. Before I could finish telling her about it we arrived in front of Mother's Dumplings which has me already salivating.
We got out of the car and headed to stand in line to wait for a table to become free. In less than 10 minutes we were already heading inside to sit on our table and as soon as we did a waiter came to us to take our order.
As soon as the waiter left we slid back into easy conversation about our day. It was always easy to talk to mom, unless I did something to put myself in danger. She wouldn't take lightly to that and I ended up having to do more chores at home thanks to me doing that often.
I mean there was the time she caught me hacking into the government or the time she aught me practicing for a fight on my room, or even the time she caught me coming home after my curfew. She was adamant I couldn't be out late at night and that I always had to be careful with whom I speak to.
When it came to my father I could never even talk about him to anyone, if anyone asked about him all I could say was that he worked a lot. It didn't bother me a lot since I could count with one hand my friends, none of them know about my father though.
He left before I was born leaving my mom to fend for herself and care for me on her own. She doesn't like to talk about him though, he might have not wanted her, but he was still the love of her life and something tells me it will continue to be that way forever. When I was younger she would tell me stories of the family she dreamt they would have together and their adventures. She doesn't knows, I know it's about them, but the way she would cry when she thought I had fallen asleep told me otherwise.
