WHY NO DESCRIPTION?!

Don't you just hate it when you read a book and it says something along the lines of 'I lived in a town called...' and that's it, no description. I'm sorry to the writer of that book if it's you but it was really dull, I'm not going to lie it was possibly the worst book I've read in my life. You carried on going like that throughout your book and honestly, there's no hope for you, give up writing and move on.

I'm sorry but I'm pretty sure that we learn't about adjectives in primary school, I'm pretty sure that we were told how much they benefit a story. Read some published books, every single one of them is descriptive, and why? Because it paints a picture.

Adjectives are what enable you to get the image that you truly want the reader to see across to them. By using adjectives you alter the blank canvas of the mind by painting it into anything that you want the reader to see.

Example;

"There was a town and it had buildings and a park"

"There was and ancient town painted in cobwebs and a thin layer of dust, it's buildings creaked as the gentle breeze blew through them giving the area an eerie feel. This feeling grew progressively stronger as I passed the towns rusted park and saw its worn swings swaying in the wind making my bones chill with the thought of the once playful children laughing joyously on them before they were gruesomely murdered"

Hmm, what one is better I wonder?

When you read the first description would you have known that I was trying to set up the scene for a horror, you would not and why wouldn't you? Simply because a town has so many possibilities to be the set up for any story. It's likely that only 1/10 people, if that, would have guessed right.

That's how easy it is for the reader to not understand what you're trying to tell them. That's why you need to explain what you're trying to get across properly. USING ADJECTIVES

If you're one of the people who does this please stop, I beg you.

Okay, comment with any really bad ones you've found, I'd love to hear them.
