Cal:
Annie was sleeping next to me, bunched up in the duvet, shivering slightly. Her dark hair fell over her face and her arms were wrapped around her stomach protectively. I smiled, just watching her. I couldn’t believe that she was mine. She was mine and she was having our baby. Everything felt like it had fallen into place, and that, for the briefest of moments, it was all going to be okay.
Don’t jinx it, Moron, she grumbled, raising her head blearily and blinking several times. I just chuckled to myself. Her cheeks were flushed from her sleep and her blue eyes were wide and innocent looking.
She rubbed at her face, sitting up straight and stretching. I winced as her bones creaked and cracked, and she grinned back.
“You’re such a wuss,” she teased, pulling the covers back over herself. As she did so, I couldn’t help but glance at her abdomen, where the almost non-existent bump was just beginning to show. Annie could deny it all she liked, but at the end of the day, she was starting to look more pregnant as each week went by. Even now, it was becoming apparent that we were going to have to stock up on peanut butter, the rate that she seemed to go through it of late.
I rolled my eyes, still smiling.
Like an eejit, Annie chimed in, smiling. I shook my head and got out of the bed, pulling on a pair of discarded jeans that had been lying on the floor. Annie watched bemusedly, pulling her hair away from her face.
“D’you want something to eat?” I asked, walking over to the door. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…
“Peanut Butter?”
“Really?” I teased. “Well, I would never have guessed that one coming…” I ducked as she threw a pillow at me, laughing as I walked out of the room. I stepped out onto the landing, only to nearly collide with Radleigh, who was muttering under his breath. He looked at me, his eyebrows raised slightly.
“I wouldn’t go down there,” he warned, running his fingers through his hair. “Jase’s in a mood about something and him and dad are having the argument to end all arguments.” I frowned; considering that Jase was Gordon’s golden boy, the news of them fighting was quite unnerving.
I moved towards the stairs.
“Oh aye,” Radleigh exclaimed, “just ignore the ginger! Typical, fucking typical!” I didn’t tell him that the fact I was brushing off what he was saying, had absolutely nothing to do with his hair colour. I heard his bedroom door slam and moments later, he turned his music up full blast, making it thump throughout the house. Everyone groaned inside my head, their annoyance echoing in my brain.
Tell him to turn it down! Ade snapped.
Tell him he’s got shite taste in music, Zane mused.
Go and get my Peanut Butter, Annie murmured. I grinned and began to walk down the stairs, humming under my breath. I don’t think, up until that point, I had ever been this happy. It only took one look at Annie, and the thought of her carrying our baby, to make me smile.
I could hear the shouting before I hit the bottom step, Gordon’s voice bouncing around the house. He was furious. I walked across the floor, steeling myself for the shouting to be aimed at me; no doubt I would get ranted at for interrupting them. What the hell was I; a child?
“…because he’s going to come for her, Jase, and what then?” Gordon snarled. “You’re just going to hand your wee sister over to him on a plate?” I stopped dead, just before I opened the door. They were obviously talking about Annie.
