STEVE, BUCKY and Sam rush up the stairs to the first floor. The halls were abandoned as all scientists had evacuated and there were no new Agents in sight. The metal frame below their feet creaks with every step they set. They had memorized the route from Dr. Hyde's office to the room where Victoria was and didn't waste a second running in that direction. It was not difficult to find with the information they had collected. Sam was pulling onto the door handle, but it wouldn't budge. Without hesitation Steve broke the door open with his shoulder. Once inside he feels as if he was unable to move. It was cold in the room, but that wasn't what made him stop.
It was the sight of his daughter with closed eyes inside that pod. Looking like she was dead.
His mind switched off. There was no longer a logical thought or a plan of attack. All there was, was this need to save her. Steve rushes towards the pod and clasps the window with his fingers. Sam warns him not to do anything drastic, but his words fell on deaf ears. He pulls with all his might, but even with his enhanced strength it was not budging a milimeter.
"There must be a way," Steve yells. He pulls his hands off the door and checks the pod in total. To the side were a few touchscreens and a keyboard. The enhanced soldier moves away from the window and stands in front of the many screens. He tried operating the thing, but he was aware this was all futile.
But his inability to figure out what to do was not their worst problem.
The Avengers may have won against the Agents that had been downstairs when they arrived, but those were not the only ones the Agency had. While the Avengers marched upstairs to join Sam, Bucky and Steve they were attacked. The Agents came from their right and the Avengers tried to fight back, but the path was too small and this was their terrain.
They retreat in the direction of Victoria's room and Steve hears their rushed steps come close. Suddenly the door was thrown open and the Avengers spilled inside. Tony was the last and closed the door. He presses himself against the door, still dressed in his Iron Man suit. A few seconds later someone or something was trying to forcefully throw the door open.
Tony pants, still getting himself together from the run to the chamber. "Alright, change of plan. We will defend you guys inside here from those crazy kid-murderers." There were a few tiny dents in his suit with scratches here and there. Steve let his gaze wander over the others. They didn't look untouched either.
He gestures to the screens in front of him. His crazed movements show his exasperation. "We need help here. I can't open this thing. It is under some kind of code, I think," he explains. Tony rolls his eyes at the explanation that the captain gave him. But then he had to focus all his attention on pushing back behind him as the Agents suddenly intensified their attempts to break through the door.
"Let us handle that then and the fossil can go cover our backs," Tony remarks. He starts dishing out orders. "Bruce, turn off the Hulk-thing and come with us. Kid, you're also on this." Peter snaps his gaze away from the window of the pod when he heard his name and turns to his mentor. "Yes, Mr. Stark," he replies, immediately rushing to action. Hulk roars, but it seems like Banner regained some control over the green rage-monster.
