The rest of my birthday went great, and I ended up making plans with Gene for his next day off. I hesitated on going through with it considering I wanted him to kiss me when we were alone, but I convinced myself it was nothing. Another reason for my reluctance was that he had almost butted into my call with my family, but it wasn't like I had much else to do. As he hadn't spent much time at the beach, we decided it was the perfect spot. Gotta get anything you've missed in! As of today, there's only two days left on the island...or three if you count the day we're leaving. Or four if you also include today, August 1st. Counting is difficult. After making the short trek to the beach, I located Gene, who had set up a picnic! He had yet to notice me, so I of course snuck up on him and launched my hands on his shoulders.
I managed to get a flinch out of him before he turned around to face me.
"Are you trying to give me a heart attack on my first real beach visit?" he complained.
Taking a seat on the blanket, I grinned. "Would it have been better if I was a gorgeous beach babe?"
"No! That would just be uncomfortable— I'm not my brother. I prefer the hot mess in front of me."
"Hey, you're still calling me hot, so I'll take it!" I exclaimed. "Huh, but do I look...not put together?"
"Y/n, you look beautiful, I was just kidding."
Beautiful?! In my simple t-shirt and denim shorts? "W-Well, if you say so. Oh! What did you mean by your 'first real beach visit'? Haven't you been here around the same time that I have? If not longer?"
He shrugged. "I haven't had much down time, and up until running into you and Dante, no one to really hang out with. Going to the beach alone is kinda...sad. The few times I've been out and about is for work to look for any talent, since the beach is a popular spot to set up a guitar or just play at one of those outdoor mini bars. Not the biggest fan of the latter, though. Not my kinda commotion."
"That makes sense! Can't relate, though. I've spent a lot of time out here. It's been pretty nice going out for a change."
"Yeah, cause you always trap yourself inside watching anime," he teased.
"Other media is very inspiring for an artist like me. Comics don't draw themselves y'know! People like me are trusted to have a vision and all that..."
"I'd say it's good for everyone to have a vision," he remarked. "I definitely like what I see before me."
I bit back a grin as I noticed my heart rate begin to increase. Keep your cool! "What kinda like?"
He smirked. "Wouldn't you like to know."
"If you aren't being direct about it, then I'm free to believe that—"
His face drew color, now presenting a light shade of red. "I-I said 'what' not 'who'..."
Oh, right. Wait, why was he playing along with the 'wOuLdN't YoU LiKe tO kNoW' line? That...doesn't make sense, and not to mention... "Your clear tell of shyness really supports what you're trying to say!"
"Yeah, I don't get shy, Y/n. That's ridiculous."
"Then why's your face red?"
"Why isn't yours?"
I narrowed my eyes at him and he averted his eyes to the sea. I hoped he didn't feel too put off, cause I was having fun keeping him on his toes. I care about Gene, I really do, but it's nice to see the tables turned for once. Most of the time he's always flustering me! However, he went a while without talking, so I decided to reignite the conversation.
