Blood and Tears

"Noooo!" Elliot yelled, nearly running down the frozen rookie as he flew past.

"I didn't mean to..." Elliot heard him say before he was at Olivia's side.

He lifted her off the ground, bringing one of his hands to join hers, trying not to cringe as it met the thick blood seeping from the wound in her stomach.

Elliot looked up at the rookie for a moment, he was calling for a bus. He looked next at their perp. There was no way the guy was still kicking, and Elliot couldn't say that he was sorry about that, but everyone knew better than to shoot someone who had their finger on a gun; reflexes could pull the trigger even after taking a bullet.

He was drawn from his thoughts by Olivia's voice. She croaked out: "El..."

"Shh. Shh. You're okay. I've gotcha," he soothed.

"I can't..." she said, teeth clenching in pain as she squeezed her eyes shut.

Elliot said, "Easy. Save your strength."

"I might not....make it."

"You're gonna make it, Liv. The bus is on its way. You're gonna be just fine," he insisted.

She sighed. "You don't...know that"

"I do."

Olivia didn't contradict him, just made a horrible choking sound and jerked forward, trying to cough. Elliot cursed when blood followed the heaving.

"Where the hell's the bus?" he yelled at the rookie, who was standing several feet away, staring at Olivia in apparent shock.

The rookie didn't answer. Elliot used his sleeve to brush the blood from her chin.

"El," she tried again.

"Please, save your strength, Liv. Do that for me, please," Elliot begged.

Olivia took a breath. "I've gotta...tell you."

He sighed. "Tell me what?"

"I have...no right...but I...I love you," she said.

Elliot's eyes widened. He was frozen until he saw that her eyes were drifting closed.

"Hey, hey. You've gotta stay with me here. Come on. Open your eyes. Come on."

She didn't comply. Took a weak breath instead.

"Olivia, no. I'm not losing you over this. Stay with me," Elliot begged.

The ambulance pulled up as he was urging her to wake up. He was pushed out of the way as the medics went to work. The following moments were a blur even as he was hurrying to jump into the ambulance to ride with her.

.....

"I have to know what's going on," Elliot insisted, knuckles going white as his hands grip the edge of the desk, his pleading with the receptionist getting him nowhere.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Stabler. As soon as we have anything, I'll let you know," she replied for the umpteenth time.

He hissed in annoyance, spinning around to find an empty chair before plopping down. Fin reminded him that yelling at the hospital personnel isn't going to get them anywhere.

After what seemed like an eternity, a doctor emerged from the side door and approached them. "You're here for Olivia Benson?"

"Yes," Elliot answered, jumping from his chair. "How is she? Is she alright?"

"Ms. Benson has lost a decent amount of blood, but the bullet has been extracted, and the bleeding has stopped. She's currently unconcious, as we had to sedate her again when she woke up, but we expect she'll regain consciousness again soon," the doctor explained.

"So, she's going to be alright?" Elliot asked tentatively.

The doctor nodded. "Yes. Barring any infection, which I don't anticipate, she should make a full recovery."

Both Elliot and Fin let out sighs of relief.

"Can I see her?" Elliot asked then.

"Yes, you may. Room 313," he replied.

Fin and Elliot walked in silence to the room, and when they reached the door, Fin patted Elliot on the shoulder, stepping off to the other wall to give them a moment.

Elliot opened the door, slipping inside the room. He walked slowly over to the bed. Olivia looked peaceful. Much better than the face contorted in pain that he remembers from earlier.

"Hey, Liv," he said softly, taking her hand. "I know you can't hear me right now, but I love you, too. I don't know what I would have done if I'd lost you."

To his surprise, she squeezed his hand. She didn't stir other than this, but no matter what happened now, at least she knew how he felt.
