Nothing really prepares you for a child who throws shoes at you. It may sound funny, but a shoe to the head can really hurt. She would curse at her mom too. Extremely loudly.
So many therapists, gurus, and so-called experts were in and out of Adelina's house. Finally, her mom Rosa, called Mrs. Nakamura, based on a little ad at the bulletin board of Ned's Green Market.
Mrs. Nakamura was very patient. She loved to say, "I'm not mad; I'm just disappointed." She was magical with Adelina. She worked with her until she was able to go to the regular school with her friends. Rosa prayed that all of the saints would fulfill Mrs. Nakamura's every wish and command.
Rosa thought she was going to lose Adelina to a behavior disorder. But that hadn't happened. Soon after the cops found her body, an officer told her that they would do everything they could to determine what had happened.
Rosa cried softly. It was the crying of a woman who had been living a hard life and who expected little from the next day. She felt an internal camera play back the memorable moments of Adelina's life.
Rosa thought of the saints, of Jesus, and of God. She wasn't mad at God; she was just disappointed.
