Slipping back into her room in the light of the morning, Nyx pulled the notebook out from where it was partially hidden up her sleeve. Scurrying over to her bed, she bundled on top of it, making herself a comfortable nest atop the mattress to go about her secret business. The slight twinges of guilt she felt at her actions, she pushed down; it was not like she wasn't going to return the book after she was done, she just had a right to find out what it was that was going on. At last she would have all the information, she thought as she thumbed the pages open; everything would, at long last make sense, and... What was this?
Nyx's eyes blew open wide as she read the name inked in fine cursive script upon the first page.
... This was the wrong book.
***
Nyx was sitting at the table in the kitchen, absentmindedly eating cereal as Grizelda proceeded to perform some kind of theatrical creation with her food on the highchair tray a little way away.
When suddenly, dressed in a switched-out cover, a copy of what she knew to be The Picture of Dorian Gray dropped down on the tabletop in front of her, and looking up, she saw him standing over her. She swallowed guiltily. "Ah."
"Ah." He agreed, pulling out and empty chair and sitting down at the table opposite her; chin resting pleasantly upon his hands. He honestly looked impressed; despite his attempts to hide it, she could see it twitching at his mouth and in the corners of his eyes. In an attempt to avoid the inevitable, Nyx took another spoonful of cereal.
"So... how did you do it?"
Nyx chewed slowly and deliberately, carefully debating her next words. "Well... to be fair, I don't really consider it to be theft, being that it's my mother's diary."
