All In Her Head

Once more in her dreams Nyx returned to the dark room. Once more there was the terror, the man in the shadows, the feeling of being so small and powerless. No air, no sound, no light.

But something had changed.

The shape cut in the dream- the door- it was there in front of her, in the centre of her vision wherever she looked, as if it had been burned into the back of her eyes.
The more she looked, the brighter and more prominent it seemed to grow; everything else appearing almost two-dimensional around it as it grew bolder.

Why was it there? Whoever- or whatever- had made it had done so for a reason. And yet, whatever was on the other side did not come through.

Then why was it there if it was not a way in?

Perhaps, Nyx realised, a chill running down her spine and settling in her stomach, it could also be a way out. A way to escape from this personal hell.

Isn't that what she wanted?

But was it worth the risk? Where did it go? What was waiting for her on the other side? Was it really worth it, rather than the hell she knew, to leap into the unknown through this dark doorway?

This was a dream. A nightmare. She knew it was. Just a fantasy. It was all in her head- a creation of her own unconscious, untempered mind.

The door called to her, drawing her in, a light in the darkness; swelling to fill her vision and seeping into her brain. Behind it, something was whispering, strange voices speaking words she couldn't make out, couldn't understand; but enticed her all the same.

All of it, the plaguing nightmares, the door, whatever lay behind; it was all just in her head. It couldn't hurt her...

Spectrally she rose from the body on the bed, the door before her. Eyes burning steel-silver, near hypnotically she took a step. There was a moment of resistance- and then she fell forward, into darkness.

So since I have University induction tomorrow, I decided to write this chapter a day early just to make sure that it got done, because I really wanted it published soon and it's actually not very long.
