Chapter Three
I wake up in my uncomfortable bed made by Gally, and I put my shoes on and exit my room. As I do, I bump into Alby on the way and he sends me a smile before continuing on his way.
"Hey Billie!" Someone shouts from outside.
I sigh, but I can't help but smile and I run outside to see most of the Glader's grouped around the camp fire. I sigh heavily once more as I make my way over in a small jog and stop placing my hand on my hip looking at Newt "Telling stories again are we?" I ask.
He smirks "you know me so well Bill" he says with cheek in his voice.
I sit down on the ground, my back against a log "Any bets on the Greenie?" I ask as I draw into the sand.
"Male"
I look up and glare at Gally "Obviously, I'm the only girl here"
I sigh and look up to see Newt looking out me, his blonde hair and blue eyes. I turn away "I've got to go" I mumble and I stand up.
"Aw, Billie you never spend any time with us!" A voice calls.
I turn and see Chuck, the Greenie from last month. I smile and ruffle his hair "Maybe next time kiddo, I'm going out today"
"You can't do that, only Alby has the authority to" Gally protests as I begin to walk away.
"Actually, with Billie being the second leader she can do as she pleases" Alby says as he walks over "Besides, I reckon it's time we had our best Runner back out in the field"
I send a smirk to Gally and smile to the other boys and then make my way back to the Homestead and to my room.
I gear up and I make my way to the kitchens and grab a sandwich from Frypan.
I haven't been in the Maze for two years now. It's been three years since I arrived. A long time, I know.
"You're finally going back out?" Fry asks as I pack my bag.
I nod "I'm not letting anything get in my way again" I say as I throw my bag over my back. There was an accident two years ago and I couldn't go back into the Maze, not after what I saw.
Minho tried to take me back in, that failed ultimately and I had nightmares for months, each night I would scream keeping everyone up until the point that Gally had to sit with me each night.
Don't know why he volunteered to do it but someone had to stay by my side or at least sleep with me during the night.
This will be my first time out there in two years, a proper route.
Then I walk out and make my way to the doors passing the boys "be careful Billie!" I hear Chuck call.
I send them a single handed wave and pick up the pace as I enter the doors. I'm back with the Runners.
I turn a corner and then another as I continue to run and slash the vines every now and again to mark my route.
I stop after an hour of running and I eat my lunch and drink some water, then I begin to make my way back to the Glade in a small jog.
I wonder what the new Greenie will look like?
