Again

Chapter Nine

I slip out of my bed extra early, 1am to be exact. I'm going back into the Maze properly this morning with Alby and Minho.

Alby is going to try to retrace Bens steps and see if he made it or got taken by the Grievers.

I pull my shoes on and then my shirt and pull on my running gear and try to be a quiet as possible. Gally rolls over and begins to snore and I smile to myself.

I then stand up and make my way to the door, I silently slip out into the light of the morning and I make my way down to the Kitchens. I pack myself some food and drink and then I run to the doors.

I see Minho and Alby already waiting, Newt is with them "ready?" Alby asks.

I nod grinning "I was born ready Al"

The doors slowly begin to open and I turn to the Homestead where I see Thomas sit up from his bed.

I wave and turn around and run into the Maze following the boys. We turn left, then another left and then right. Then we find Bens pack.

I crouch down examining it "its full" I say astonished turning to Minho and Alby.

Then I see it. I jump up reaching forward "ALBY!" I scream.

The Grievers stinger comes out of his body and it crawls away. I crouch down beside Alby, tears in my eyes. He's always been my bigger brother for here years now "no no no no" I sob.

Minho hits him round the head and looks at the sky "we need to get him back, right now"

I close my eyes and slowly nod. Then the images pour through my mind and I scream loudly placing my hands over my ears and crouching down.

Thomas begins hacking away with the machete at the tree and then we hear thunder and we look up to see rain.

"Let's go" I say as it slowly begins to rain.

Everyone pours into the shelter of the Homestead or other buildings and we watch as it rains.

Suddenly there's a really loud scream, a blood curling scream. I jump forward "BILLIE!" I shout.

Thomas turns to me a few minutes later after everyone has settled, the scream still in my ears "they should be back by now"

"They'll be back" I say reassuring myself.

"What happens if they're not back?"

"They'll be back" I say simply ignoring his question.

Soon the rain clears and we make our way to the doors. As we arrive a figure bolts through and crashes into Gally hugging his waist.

Then I see the brown hair and recognise the person as BILLIE, though something's wrong, and she's sobbing uncontrollably.

"Billie, what happened?" I ask as she pulls away from Gally's now tear stained shirt and hugs me.

She opens her mouth but then begins to sob again. Suddenly there's a grumbling sound and we turn to see the doors slowly beginning to close.

"Oh no" I whisper to myself as I wrap a protective arm around Billies shoulders.

Thomas points in the distance "look!"

Slowly we all turn back and we see two figures turn the corner. "Something's wrong" I say.

I squint my eyes and as the figures draw closer I see Alby passed out draped across Minho's shoulder. Minho trying to pull him to the doors.

"We should send someone out" Thomas says.

I shake my head "that's against the rules" and everyone begins to shout "Come on!"

"Minho"

"You can do it"

Just as the doors are about to close Thomas lurches forward and I reach out, it's too late.

He slips through the doors and they close behind him leaving us all astonished by his actions.
