Tobin stood next to Alex on the stage. They had gotten their medals and were just waiting to raise the trophy. Tobin looked over to Andy who was standing with Theo. They were holding hands and Theo was laughing at something Andy had said. She saw Andy with her hand in her pocket. Tobin smiled as she thought about the little box that was in her daughters pocket. Andy turned her head to look at her mom. Andy smiled widely when she locked eyes with Tobin. Andy pulled her hand out of her pocket to give her mom a thumbs up. Tobin nodded and smiled.
Several minutes later, the trophy was given to Alex. Alex looked at her girlfriend next to her. "Let's raise it together baby." Alex said. Tobin smiled and nodded, placing her hands on the trophy. "On the count of three. One. Two. Three!" With that, Alex and Tobin raised the trophy high. The team raised their hands up in celebration as the confetti rained down on them. Smiles etched along every USA player, coach and fan, were about to grow.
Tobin got down from the stage and walked over to Andy. "Is it time?" Andy asked as she watched her mom walk up to her. Tobin smiled her million dollar smile and nodded. Andy reached into her pocket and pulled the box out. She handed it to her mom. "Go get her mom." Andy said as Tobin smiled and turned around. She put the box in between the waistband of her shorts and her stomach. Alex was sitting on the stage taking everything in. Tobin walked over to Jill.
"Hey Tobs. You ready?" Jill asked. Tobin nodded and smiled. "Ok. You want us to record it right?" Tobin nodded again not trusting her voice. Jill chuckled. "Ok Tobs. We have a mic for you." Tobin nodded. One of the coaching staff brought it over and let Tobin weave it through her shirt. "Go get her Tobs." Tobin nodded and took a deep breath. She found Alex and walked over to her. Tobin walked on the stage and sat next to Alex. Tobin noticed the cameras. Some were for the USWNT but some were for tv.
"Toby." Alex said, hugging Tobin.
"Hi princess." Tobin replied. She remembered that the mic would pick up everything they said so she decided to just jump right into it. She didn't want to wait any longer anyway. "Hey Lex?" Tobin asked, standing up and reaching her hand out for Alex to take. Alex looked up at Tobin confused but took her hand anyway.
"What's going on Toby?" Alex said.
"I have a question to ask you." Tobin said simply. Alex still looked at her girlfriend in confusion. Tobin decided to begin. She took Alex's hands in hers. "Ok. So Alex. When I met you for the first time, I was stunned. I had never seen someone as beautiful as you before in my life. I knew in that moment that you were going to be special to me. When I was being put on loan to play for PSG, it felt like my world was ending because I was going to be away from you. I thought you were going to go somewhere else. Leave me to come back to Portland alone. But when I came back, you were still there. You were there when I told you about Andy for the first time. You held me and told me that you would do everything in your power to help me find her. And then we did find her. Then I lost her before I even knew it but you held me and picked up the pieces again. You were there for me when I hurt my ankle. You were there when I felt lost. You have just always been there for me." Tobin took a deep breath and realized she was crying as was Alex. "A long time ago, I told myself something. Something I never thought I'd do. I said 'I'm going to marry that girl'. You are that girl Alex." Tobin noticed Alex's eyes widen. Was Alex finally catching on to what she was saying? "When I got Andy back, she said she thought of you like her other mom. So we made it official. Alex Morgan was Andy Heath's mom. But that's not enough for me. I don't want you to just be my girlfriend or Andy's mom. I want you to be my wife. I want you to be Alex Morgan-Heath. I want to wake up to you every morning and call you my wife. I want to wake up and say good morning to our children. I want you Alex. I've always wanted you." Tobin said looking down at her feet. She pulled her hand away from Alex's and reached into her waistband for the box. "So." Tobin got down on one knee. "Alexandra Patricia Morgan. Will you marry me?" Alex put her hands up to her face. She felt the tears running down. A mix of celebrating the World Cup win and the fact that Tobin Heath was proposing to her.
Alex nodded her head. "Yes Tobin. Yes of course I will." Alex cried out and Tobin smiled brightly. Alex put her left hand out for Tobin to take and put the engagement ring on. She pulled Tobin to her feet and leaned in to kiss her. The crowd erupted around them as they witnessed the moment with the pros. When the two pulled away, all they could do was stare into each other's eyes.
Andy ran as fast as her hurt knee would let her and she collided into a hug with her moms. "Congratulations moms!" Andy yelled, smiling brightly. She stared up at her moms. She gave them another hug before going to find Theo.
"So." Tobin started. "What's it like being engaged?" Alex chuckled. "I wouldn't know. I don't have anything to prove it."
"How about we prove it then?" Alex said. Tobin looked at Alex in shock. Alex looked around for Kelley who just happened to be very close by. "Kelley!" Alex yelled, getting the defenders attention. Kelley smiled and jogged over to the two. She didn't say a word. All she did was hand Alex the blue box. Tobin looked at her, now fiancé, in shock. "Tobin Powell Heath..."
