◇3rd POV◇

As Mia grew used to the hectic lives of the Dregs, as well as getting to know the Crows, she had finally found safety. A safety net of a sort. Kaz had told her to come to his office after breakfast, which made her worry. Did she mess up the last heist? Mia had nearly gave away their position, as she had to distract the guards with a phony story, and it had worked, but Jes had found her in a very compromising position. He teased her about it all the way back to the Slat. As she reached Kaz's office, she took a deep breath and knocked. A raspy "come in" answered back. She walked in and she saw Kaz reading some official looking papers. He looked up when he saw her and motioned for her to sit down. She sat and looked at Kaz, trying not to let her nerves get the best of her. Kaz sat down as Mia looked around his office. He smirked " So, Mia. Today is the day. I have your indenture paid off but I'm going to terminate your contract. I want you to go with me. " Mia's eyes went wide with fear " Kaz..no. I..I can't. I can't go. Please don't make me. " He looked at her with...sympathy? She couldn't get a read on  those dark eyes of his. " Mia, if you don't go, they won't believe me and try to back out of the deal, and I promised you I would get you out of that flower-permeated hellhole, but you have to let me. I know what I'm doing. " Mia looked down and and held her head in her hands. She sighed " Alright, Kaz. I'll go with you. But, I can't promise I won't strike down Onkle Felix and the rest of those bastards where they stand. " Kaz's smirk grew " I wouldn't have it any other way. " Mia smiled as the two criminals prepared for her freedom...

♤Mia's POV♤

I smirked to myself as I walked with Kaz towards the White Rose, to seal the deal. (I honestly didn't know if it was fake or not at this point.) Kaz had a determined look on his face and another emotion in his eyes I couldn't quite determine. Tonight definitely had the potential to be a bloodbath. We came up to the brothel I was used to and as usual, all the air left my lungs. Kaz looked back when he noticed I hesitated. I steeled my expression and caught up to Kaz. He nodded and we went inside. As we walked up to the stairs to Felix's office, I tried to keep from my knees from buckling. The roses..so many roses. I continued to walk and we finally made it. I felt a small sense of relief as we walked into Felix's office. He frowned upon seeing us and I smirked at that, glad to put some unhappiness into the man that caused other girls (and guys) like me so much pain. Kaz looked at him as he stood in front of him " I'm here with Mia, Felix, and it's time for you to pay up. Do you believe me, or would you like a demonstration?" Felix paled " Alright, Brekker, but Rollins will be sorry to lose such a jewel. She was his favorite." I looked down as I remembered what that monster did and then I let anger take over. But, what I didn't see, was the anger on Kaz's face when he heard Rollins was my client. Rage clouded over my face. I watched as the man flinched at my expression and I smirked in response, once again glad to put fear into this heartless man. Kaz looked at the man square in the eye " Now, this doesn't need to get violent, but you never know if I might lose my grip, and I may lose the patience I have so graciously gathered before coming here. So, I'd advise you to think cautiously and hand over the indenture, and we will be on our way. If not, well, things might get...messy. And, we don't want that, do we? " Felix shook his head rapidly, and Kaz continued " Well then, we will take the papers we need and be on our way, ' Felix handed over the papers but not before Kaz snarled in a whisper almost, ' If I even hear that you come near Mia again, I will personally deal out a reckoning that not even you can come back from, and you will be begging for death by the time I'm done with you. " Felix snarled " Is that a threat, Brekker?" Kaz chuckled darkly " No, that's a promise, Felix. I will destroy everything you've built, then I will destroy you. Brick by brick. Are we clear? " Felix nodded and Kaz released him. Kaz looked at me and nodded " Let's go. Unless..." I noticed his expression shift to a darker one and I nodded. He looked down " I'll leave you to it. " My dagger slid into my hand. I stalked toward him, as he pleaded for his life "Please, Mrs. Thornhill. Please, spare me. I can give you anything. Riches, silks, a nice home..please." I snarled " Why should I? You didn't spare me. You didn't give me a chance. You sold me, for a roll of kruge, and coin in your pocket! What I will do is this." I struck like a viper and next thing I knew, his throat was slit. Like a ripe berry, blood spilled from his neck like a stream. I snarled over his blood soakerld body as he gasped for air which would never again come. " I am not your lovely rose anymore. I am the Serpent, and I always strike true. " I walked out, blood on my clothes and my hands. Kaz saw me and stood back. But his smirk was more than telling. We walked out, the smell of freedom on the Ketterdam wind.

3rd POV◇

When Mia and Kaz returned to the Crow Club, Jesper nearly dropped his drink. Mia was covered in blood, and Kaz was as stony as ever. Jesper walked up to Mia, intrigue in his voice but laced with concern." You get into a scuffle, love? " Mia shook her head " No, Jes. This is the blood of the man who enslaved me. He's dead. And this is his blood. I should have killed him long ago, but I didn't have the strength. I'm going to wash this off. And Kaz?" Kaz turned towards the auburn haired woman's voice, and she smiled " Thank you. For what you've done. For giving me the strength I needed. It is greatly appreciated. " Kaz dipped his head " You're welcome. Consider it an initiation. " Mia smiled and waved to the Crows, to which they all wished Mia a good night. She headed upstairs, and as soon as the door closed, Nina lost it. She smiled " Brekker, you are definitely smitten!" Kaz turned towards her with a sarcastic quirk of his eyebrow as he took off his coat " Zenik, I honestly don't know what you are talking about. Has all that sugar gone to your brain cells? I'm genuinely curious. " Nina rolled her eyes and put her hands on her hips " No, Kaz. No need to be rude. And you do know what I'm talking about. I saw your face when she thanked you. You looked like a child on Christmas. And you definitely like her. You may not want to admit it, but it's true. And you know it. I know it. We all know it. Just tell her, because I know that she most likely feels the same. So, man up and tell her before someone else does. " Kaz rolled his eyes " Well then, if that's all, then you can stop interfering in my personal life and get back to work! And even if I did feel something for her, she is a valuable investment and she's not worth the trouble right now, in the state she's in. I don't feel anything for her but camaderie and that's all. Now, get back to work. " Kaz walked up the stairs, but not before he heard a cry of pain and a sound of someone rushing to another room. Mia. Had she heard everything he had said? From what he heard, he guessed she did. He massaged his temples in regret. Why did he have to be so stupid? He didn't have to insult her. But you did... He walked up the stairs and went to Mia's door. He stood by the door, but he didn't dare knock. He leaned against the wall, as he listened to Mia cry heart wrenchingly. Kaz's heart shattered as he listened to the pain he caused. No matter how much he wanted to drown Kaz Rietveld in the icy waters of Ketterdam's harbor, that all changed when Mia was around
He was resurrected once again and that  young boy inside him wanted to kiss her and hold her, and love her, but Kaz Brekker maintained love was a weakness, but he also wanted Mia. But, he was wrong for her. Too broken. She didn't need a man like him. She needed someone good, someone who didn't bring grief and destruction with him everywhere he went. Mia's cries proved it. As he limped to his office, he tried to get the sound of Mia's heart wrenching sobs out of his head. As he tried to fall asleep, he rubbed his eyes, and was shocked to find they were wet. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to block out her cries that echoed around his skull, as a single tear slid down his cheek.
