Listen to the Sleigh Bells (SanemixKanae)

Legend has it that when Santa rings his bells while sailing over a couple, they are blessed with true love for a lifetime.

Kanae Kocho stood in the spot, where she had been waiting, every Christmas, for the past nine years of her life. She was wrapped in a shawl, furry inside so as not to give her frostbite before the holiday season was over. Her hands were tucked in a muff.

"Are you still waiting for that fiancee of yours?" an old woman asked, her eyes worn with age and swimming in kindness.

"Ah, yes," she nodded and bowed respectfully.

"You know, if that boy has promised to come back for ages, but hasn't, there's a chance your love isn't meant to be," she advised. Kanae frowned, but listened to her advice.

She had befriended the old woman somewhere around three months ago. Her fiancee, enlisted in the army, had promised to come back, while the snow was still fresh and the trees were ready to bloom.

She had never told anyone about his enlisting in the army, and she couldn't tell. She sighed.

"I trust he'll come back, ma'am. You don't need to worry," she said assuredly, trying to maintain the smile on her face. The old woman nodded, seeing that her advice was simply bouncing off her radiant grin.

She turned her back to the old woman, and stared at the empty road.

On this bus, on this day, she wanted her fiancee to come to this very spot, to embrace her, to return back to their life that they had promise to each other.

"Kanae?"

The sound of the rushing bus nearly blocked the sound coming from his mouth. But she would recognize her fiancee's voice anywhere.

"Sanemi?" she called, tears beginning to stream down her cheeks  as she realized that he was standing on the edge of the curb, opposite from her. He looked different that he did in his youth, his ski ridden with scars and his purple eyes permanently narrowed instead of widened in curiosity.

"Sanemi!" she called, rushing towards him while the cars stopped. He opened his arms for her, and they were entangled to mess of kisses and crying and an embrace that was longer than the one they last shared.

The clock struck midnight as she listened to him whisper sweet nothings into her ear, and the quiet sound of sleigh bells ringing overcame her senses as she looked up to the sky.

A/N: Super short, sorry. But I have to catch up *commence sheepish laughter*
