Inko looked thinner than Izuku last remembered her being. She looked more like she had when he was a child, aside from the crow's feet beside her eyes and the blank look across her face, a blank look that immediately transformed into shock and delight upon seeing Izuku.
"Izuku! My baby!" Inko cried. Just as Izuku had predicted, the waterworks were already flowing.
"Mum!" Izuku replied in kind, he rushed over to his mother's side and pulled her into a hug, being sure not to squeeze her too hard lest he aggravate her wounds, "How are you? I've missed you so much!"
"Not as much as I've missed you, Dear. Oh, Izuku, are you ok? You look so tired, and your hair is even more of a mess than usual." Inko fussed, she smoothed back Izuku's wild curls and placed a kiss on his forehead.
"I'm ok, Mum, there's just been a lot going on in my life. I'll... I'll tell you more when you're a bit better, I don't want to stress you out." Izuku felt immensely guilty for not telling his mother the entire truth, after all, she was his mother and she deserved to know that her son had been kidnapped.
"Ok, Dear, I trust you," Inko sighed. Again, a surge of guilt rushed through Izuku, ever since starting at UA, Izuku had been keeping more and more from Inko, if not to keep her mind at peace, then to ensure that she was safe from villains.
"Thanks, mum. Anyway, you didn't answer my question, how are you? Aizawa told me that healing quirks aren't working on you." Izuku's eyes darted over his mother in an effort to seek any injuries she might still have.
"Oh, yes, well... The doctor said that I'll have to heal the old fashioned way since every attempt to heal me with a quirk only made the wounds worse. I'm fine though, I just need to do some physical therapy and I'll be as right as rain. Although, my doctor did warn me that I might have to use a walking stick. It's rather daunting, you know, I'm not quite that old yet." Inko chuckled.
Izuku couldn't help but smile at his mother, despite the dreadful situation they had found themselves in, his mother was still a shining light in his life. She offered a secure base from which he could branch out into the world and be the best he could possibly be. Of course, Inko wasn't perfect, no parent was, when he had needed her unconditional support as a child, she hadn't been able to provide. She could be overprotective at times, due to his being quirkless. And, sometimes, she was just too kind for her own good, often being walked over and used by others. And yet, despite all of these shortcomings, Izuku adored and loved his mother more than anything in the world. She cheered him on. She believed in him. She loved him. That's all he could ever ask for.
"As long as you're ok," Izuku hummed, "I'm really sorry that you got caught up in this attack, Mum. I know that the police say that it was randomized, but... I think the League of Villains were behind the attack, I can't help but feel like this is all my fault."
Finally, Izuku got the burdening weight that had been sitting heavy for the last few months off of his chest. The attack on his home, an attack that had cost not only his mother but also their neighbours their homes, was obviously targeted. The LOV was trying to demoralize Izuku, and it had worked. Izuku felt terrible.
"Oh, Honey," Inko sighed, "I don't blame you at all, and I'm sure that our neighbours don't either. As upsetting as it is, these sorts of things happen all of the time. I'm sure that our home has already been rebuilt. That's just how a super-human society works."
To say that Izuku had been comforted was far from the truth. Whilst he knew there was truth to his mother's words, it didn't mean that he was particularly happy with them. So what if they lived in a super-human society, that didn't mean that civilians should have to live in fear of their homes being destroyed by a stray villain attack or reckless hero.
