Kai's pov.
We got out of the warehouse safely. Thanks to a man and a woman that I had no idea what their names were. I was happy that they helped us especially Warren. I wasn't ready to lose her as well. The list of people I've lost is already long enough.
I was pulled out of my thoughts by the man speaking up.
"If you don't mind my asking, what were you folks doing wandering out there near the reactor?" His low voice sounded full of worry. So it must be something dangerous huh?
Warren then spoke up but this time I didn't pay attention. I was more focused on where we were headed. It looked like another warehouse except this one had a plane in it. The plane was beautiful. It was white with bright accents. I felt like I've seen it somewhere.
"Welcome to Edgemont, South Dakota." The man spoke up. I looked around and recognized the place. Turns out that this was a place where I spent a few years of my life.
Tears were collecting in my eyes as I found a chance to get away from the group and drown in memories for a while.
I found a quiet place that no one could find me in. It also was out of a zombies reach so it was perfect. It was a small space that was probably created to block out the Z's. There were a couple of cars stacked creating a small gap between the wall and the cars. I slithered in and made myself comfortable.
*flashbacks*
"Kai you are already here!" A woman's voice called my name. I looked down from the treehouse I was in and there was the owner of the voice. She was a beautiful woman in her 30's. She was my best friend's mother.
I climbed down my treehouse and ran towards her. She pulled me into a hug. As I pulled away I heard my bestfriends voice.
"Kai you lost hide and seek. AGAIN!" I giggled and my bestfriend ran towards me. He was pretty short for a 14 year old. He had freckles planted all over his nose bridge and his forehead. The wind was playing in his dark brown hair and the sun was shining so bright that he had to shield his grey eyes.
We had been friends since the age of 6. His mother was a best friend to my mom. After my mother went missing her bestfriend promised my dad t take care of me when he couldn't. So when he left for his 'business trip' I went to my bestfriends house. That's when the whole apocalypse started.
*back into present time*
I realized I had stopped crying and now I was just stupidly smiling. I wiped my eyes and calmed down. The group must be worried sick.
I got out of my hiding spot and went back to the warehouse where they were having a talk with the old man.
"She was just here a second ago." I head Doc tell Warren. I giggled and just casually walked in like nothing had happened.
I felt eyes dart my way and I just ignored them. I knew that they questioned my disappearing. I had pulled my hat lower to my eyebrows and looked down to the ground so they couldn't tell that I cried but also to not scare the old man and the woman with my scar.
I felt someone tug at my arm. I looked at their shoes and it was Warren. I tilted my head up a bit so that she could see at least a bit of my eyes and I quietly glared at her with the corner of my eye. I probably looked like I'm crazy but at least I let her know why I kept looking at the ground.
"Jeez Kai that look!" She said and I just smirked. I knew that I will give someone the same look one day. I just gotta figure out who will it be.
As she went back to the previous conversation I just stood there letting the woman scan me if I had contained too much radiation. After she told me that the measurements are normal she handed me a pill.
I took it in my hand and looked down at it not letting the woman see I'm hesitant. She still noticed that and explained that it is just an iodine pill.
I immediately understood why and placed it in my mouth without tilting my head back. I noticed that Cass who was standing near me had a bottle of water. I snatched it out of her hands and turned around to swallow the dry pill.
As I turned back I kept my gaze to the ground until I heard the man ask a question.
"Why is she hiding her face? Is she afraid or something?"
Warren then tried to come up with an excuse and I just shushed her. I told her that it's fine and I tilted my head up so far that I could see their faces and they could observe my face.
I felt them stare at me. To be fair if I saw my own face I would stare too. Just imagine two eyes. Each in a different color due to heterochromia. One green one brown. Across the left side goes a scar stretching from above the eyebrow giving it a nice little slit, down to her jawline. The scar was looking all nice and healed. I was lucky I wasn't half blind.
They both just kept staring until I just let out a laugh. It wasn't sounding sane but that was the point. I wanted to scare them so they would remember that it's not nice to stare. As I had finished laughing I looked back at them with a slight smirk left on my face.
They looked terrified. I bowed down like in medieval times while not taking my eyes off them.
"Kailey Diego Vasquez at your service" I said. As I spoke out my last name the man seemed to wince a bit. Looks like he might know who I was.
