The next day I went to school. I got all the work I missed from my teachers and kept reminding myself to turn everything in the next day.

It’s now a friday yet again and I was hoping Evan and I could hang out again today. I can now honestly say that we are friends.

I heard someone open and close the front door and I knew it was him.

“Hey Evan! I’m in my room!” I yelled.

“Okay!”

I wonder what made him change his mind about me? I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. Maybe one day he would tell me. If only I had the guts to ask him.

He came upstairs into my room and sat down on the bed with me.

“What’s up?” I asked him.

“Nothing much, just glad I’m out of my house.” He replied.

“Do you have any siblings?”

“Yeah. A little brother. He’s three years younger than me, so fourteen. And the my older brother who picked me up from your house a couple weeks back. He is in college so I barely see him, because he lives there.”

“I never knew that. what’re there names?”

“My younger brother’s name is Alex and John is my older brother.”

“So you see Alex though right?” I asked.

“Yeah. He is the one who texts me when I am over at your house.”

I furrowed my eyebrows. I wonder what he says that makes Evan so anxious to get back to his house.

“So enough about me. What do you want to do?” He asked.

“We can just stay here and watch a couple of movies?” I suggested.

“Sounds good.”

Suddenly his phone went off. He looked at it and I knew it was his brother Alex.

“I gotta go.” He said getting up.

“Wait! Let me come with, maybe I can help with whatever he needs.” I said.

“No.” He said sternly, which actually made me scared of him a little.

“Okay.”

“I’ll be back later. You stay here.”

I didn’t know what was happening but Evan walked out of my room. I followed him. He then started running towards the door and to his car.

Me being the nosy person I am, I followed him this time. I was so anxious to know what was happening because everytime he got a text he had to leave right away.

Before he drove off I opened the side door and jumped into the back, hoping he didn’t notice me. I sighed in relief that he didn’t, and hid in the back, waiting for him to arrive to wherever he was going.

I looked up slowly and saw Evan running his hand through his hair. I caught sight of his face in the mirror. He looked frustrated, scared, sad, and angry at the same time.

I instantly wanted to help him.

He turned a corner which made me fall onto the floor, because I obviously didn’t have a seat belt on.

I raised myself back up quickly and looked up again to see if he heard me fall. I guessed that he didn’t because he did not even glance back here for a second.

Whatever is going on in his mind is troubling him.

He stopped at a red light and sighed loudly.

“C’mon c’mon change to green! I have to help my brother!” He said, yelling at the light.

When the light turned green he sped off saying something on the lines of  “Thank you.”

Evan drove into his driveway and slammed on the breaks. He got out and ran for the doors, going inside.

I got up and got out of the car. I walked up to the doors and listened in to try and hear whatever might be happening.

There was a couple of screams from an unfamiliar voice, which I assumed was his brother.

“ALEX?! WHERE ARE YOU?” I heard Evan scream.

“HELP!” I guessed was Alex said.

I quietly opened the door and hid behind a wall.

I saw Evan running towards his brother, who was crying. Alex had a lot of bruises on him that I noticed were healing, and he had some cuts on his body.

“Are you okay? What happened?” Evan asked Alex quietly, holding him in his arms.

“Dad..He hit me. I don’t know where he is now though, right when he hurt me I ran to get my phone to text you.” Alex said in between sobs.

I was shocked. I had no idea Evan had a life like this. He had to take care of his brother and himself.

“Lets Go.” He said as he lifted Alex up from the ground so he could walk with him to the door.

I heard footsteps coming and my instincts kicked in as I hid in the closet that was nearby.

I could see Evan pushing Alex so he was behind him, and a man in front of them. It was most likely his dad.

“Leave him alone and let us go.” Evan said.

“Who’s going to stop me from hurting him, you? I could hurt you also if you want.” The man said laughing.

The man walked up to them and grabbed Evan.

“Alex hide!” Evan yelled.

“No! Let me help you!” He said still crying.

I saw tears roll down Evans face. “Please.”

Alex slightly nodded and ran to the closet I was in.

There was no point in hiding again so I just waited for him to come. He closed the closet door and jumped in surprise when he saw me.

“Who are you?” He asked.

“I’m a friend of Evans. I followed him here.” I said.

“Are you okay?” I asked him.

He looked at me and then started crying again. I held him in my arms and kept saying things like ‘it’s okay’ and ‘everything will be okay’.

I looked through the closet doors and saw Evan on the ground getting beat up by his dad. “Stay here.” I told Alex, letting go of him and opening the doors.

“Hey! Leave him alone!” I screamed.

His Dad stopped hurting Evan and they both looked over at me.

“Annabelle you can’t be here. Go.” Evan said.

“No.” I said, tears sliding down my face.

“Who’s this?” His Dad said with a creepy smile.

“Just leave her alone.” Evan said angrily.

“Get off him, and let them leave before I call the police.” I said to his dad trying to put on a brave face.

His Dad looked shocked at what I said and got off Evan.

I took this as my chance to get them out of here.

“C’mon.” I said grabbing Evan and getting Alex out of the closet he was hiding in.

Their Dad looked at me angrily. “You think you can just grab my boys and go? Think again.”
