The news about Ruth coming to the beach house yesterday made him feel unsettled, so Zane decided to book flight tickets and bring Mae somewhere else for their short getaway. He didn't want Mae to feel distant again now that it seemed like she has opened up to him a little. He was afraid that she would start to detach herself and give him the cold shoulders again if Ruth interrupts them.
"I would be fine with just having our, uh... honeymoon, at the beach house," Mae told him while they were on their way to the airport. She reached for his hand that was resting on her thigh and held it in her hands, comparing the size of their hands just to past time.
"Why do you say it like that?" Zane scoffed, interlocking their fingers, "Are you disgusted by the thoughts of honeymoon?"
"I just haven't fully grasped the fact that I'm married. I was single like a few days ago, and was your maid. I can't even call you by your first name without feeling funny."
"You were eloquent last night, why are you pretending you didn't just call me Zane at least a hundred times?"
"Yeah, I drank a lot and wasn't myself, plus I was horny but that's out of the question, but to be fair it didn't reach a hundred. Maybe less than ten."
Zane stared at her, and she stared right back with an innocent grin on her face, playing with his fingers. She fixed her hair, "Also, I haven't done it in... Years, maybe."
"We'll see." He smirked and adverted his gaze out the window.
"What do you mean?"
"You are prohibited from drinking tonight. We'll see which variable made you the woman you are last night."
"We'll see," she told him.
"To be fair I was also in heat so I probably didn't count that correctly."
Mae laughed, "Alright, fair and square."
A few minutes later, they reached the airport. While unloading their bags, Zane saw a familiar woman standing a distance away, seemingly looking for someone. Zane grabbed Mae's arm in attempt to stop her from looking at the direction. He looked at her and smiled when Mae looked at him in confusion. "Hi," he grinned.
"Hello," she replied, almost as if they weren't just flirting in the car earlier. She pecked him on the lips when he pouted them, and then told him, "I need to use the bathroom real quick. I'll meet you at the gate?"
"Sure. Be careful," Zane reminded her, letting her go along with his assistant who was there to help them at the airport.
He then turned to look at the other woman and he was convinced that it's Ruth when he saw her turning around. He couldn't tell what's crazier, his ability to still recognize her from afar, or the fact that she seemed to know wherever he goes these days.
Zane approached her, grabbing her by the arm and dragging her to a rather secluded area. When he finally got to look at her closely, he understood why Martin said Ruth didn't look like herself. She seemed to have lost some weight and her eyes looked tired. She looked at him for a while before throwing herself onto him, hugging him tight.
"Ruth, please. What the hell is wrong with you?" Zane pushed her away and stepped back.
"I just wanted to see you," she muttered softly. "I wanted to talk to you."
"How did you find out that I'm here?"
"I just figured that you usually go on overnight trip and come back the next day, so I've been waiting here since last night," Ruth smiled softly. Zane looked away and sighed, right, he forgot about the old photo he uploaded last night. Ruth grabbed his hand and tried to take him somewhere. "Are you hungry? Let's have breakfast--"
