"Careful."
"Don't overreact," Mae sighed as she let go of his hand after stepping out of the car. The man has always been full of courtesy, but it seemed like it doubled, if not tripled, right after he found out she was pregnant just last month.
"I'm pregnant, not handicapped."
"But still, be careful," Zane reminded her. She scoffed and squeezed his hand when he held hers as they walked into the hospital. They were there to visit Alaia, who had just went through a surgery to save Ellie's life last night. Mae wanted to be there for those two women, but she was too tired to even get out of bed, and not to mention that her husband would not let her leave home given the time and circumstances.
They tried so hard to keep Alaia's identity hidden, but Ellie insisted to know and eventually met with Alaia. Being the egoistic woman she has always been, Ellie tried to refuse the transplant, but Mae came to see her and insisted that she try to 'extend her life' with or without the transplant for Mae was pregnant and did not want to get stressed or depressed by the situation. Something about the pregnancy announcement changed Ellie's mind, and she agreed to receive Alaia's liver.
Right after the surgery, Ellie met Alaia briefly, probably to thank the woman, before she requested to change to another private hospital and refused any visits. Mae would not ask for more, because knowing Ellie will live longer now was more than enough for her.
"She will probably show up again during your labor," Alaia reassured Mae after seeing the slight disappointment on the pregnant lady's face every time Ellie's name was mentioned.
Mae sighed, "I hope so, too. Was she looking better when she met you here?"
"Definitely better," Alaia nodded, "Healthier."
"Then I wouldn't have to worry much," Mae nodded, "I'm pretty sure Cade would look after her."
"Oh, Cade was here with her, too. I suppose they got back together?" Alaia assumed, "Anyway, enough about Ellie. I want to talk about my niece or nephew now. How are you feeling, mama?"
"Normal," Mae told her calmly, "Just some dizzy spells every now and then. Other than that, everything else is quite normal."
"I can't believe you let Zane knock you up. You were supposed to be my wife, not his," Alaia said jokingly.
"It's okay, I'll tell the baby that you're the dad."
"Hey," Zane frowned, halting while he was peeling fruits for the ladies, "I heard that."
Alaia rolled her eyes and looked at Mae again, "You gave me pregnancy scare when you said you are pregnant. Martin and I have been reckless for the past couple of weeks and your announcement just made us extra careful."
"Martin is a family man," Zane said as he came to serve them fresh fruits. "If you get pregnant, he would definitely be more than ready."
"I'm not ready," Alaia pointed out, "I will mother Mae's child and consider it a trial version of having a baby."
Zane shrugged, and he smiled when Mae looked at him. Alaia then hummed, "Come to think of it, I think everyone in your friend group are family men. Everyone's somehow ready to settle down."
"Not Xavi," Zane shook his head.
"He's the youngest," Mae defended the guy who had been like a little brother to her, "Let him be."
"I'm just saying," Zane shrugged.
"Anyway," Alaia sighed as she lied down. "I think I'm going to rest now before Martin comes to bug me with his unnecessary worries. I'm not sick. I'm doing good deeds, and that guy decided that I'm close to death already."
