"Can we meet up? I need to talk to you," Mae said into the phone as she cleared up the paper bags after organizing some groceries she bought on her way home from the hospital.
"Sure, but I'm currently at Martin's, can you come here instead? I would come running to you but I'm having bad period cramps, baby." Alaia sighed, and Mae heard the faint groan following her little whine.
"Perfect. I'll see you there," Mae hummed, "Do you need anything? I'll grab it for you on the way." She opened the fridge and grabbed a couple of chocolate bars, throwing it into her purse.
"No, honey, I'm fine. Just come over," Alaia told her, "I'll send you the location, okay? See you."
"Alright," Mae hummed, ending the phone call. She looked around and sighed, Zane wasn't home yet, although he did overworked himself for the weekend he wanted to have with her. In the end, something came up and he had to spend his Sunday with someone else.
Mae left the house again and for the first time in a while, she wished she has her own car so she didn't have to hail a cab each time she's out alone. While waiting for the cab, she looked down and felt weird that just a few hours ago she didn't know she has a human growing inside her, but now she's completely aware that she's pregnant.
She held her breath and sighed as she shook her head, "Gosh, all the alcohol I consumed, I'm so sorry baby. I'll be careful from now on."
All she thought about on her way to Martin's place to meet Alaia was that she is becoming a mother soon. She reached into her pocket and fished out her phone to text Zane. She forgot to tell him where she's heading and the man might freak out if he gets home before her because the last thing she told him was that she's planning to sleep until he come back. No other plans.
The cab came to a stop for the red light at a junction, and people were crossing the street. Mae lifted her gaze for a split second just to see where she was at, then she had to look twice when she saw a distinguished man walking among the crowd. Mae thought it was fate that they crossed path and she was excited to see Zane in a random place. She told the driver to pull over at the bustop in front as the light turned green.
Then time slowed down. Mae looked at Zane and learned that it wasn't a good kind of fate. Walking right beside her husband was Ruth Harpers - also pregnant, at that.
"Can you hold for a second? I'll pay more if I have to, please wait for me. I'll be quick," Mae told the taxi driver as she paid him the amount he asked for, just in case he couldn't wait of she didn't make it back to the car. Mae stepped out and paced to the junction where she saw the two people she didn't expect to see together. Didn't he said he's out with a client? Didn't he clearly told her there's nothing going on between him and Ruth? Didn't he swear that whatever happens, Mae will always be his priority? And was Ruth pregnant or did she saw it wrongly?
Mae's head was flooded with questions that she didn't know where she was heading nor what was she planning to so. She looked around and the couple weren't anywhere around any longer. Mae thought of crossing the road to look for Zane, because she was sure that they came from the other side of the road. Maybe they went back to where they came from.
Mae had one foot set on the road, not noticing that the light was still red because there were not much traffic going on, but several cars headed down the road were picking up speed to chase the green light. It could have went wrong, but thankfully someone grabbed her arm and pulled her back to the side of the road.
She stared at the man as he frowned at her. The voices inside her head slowly disappeared and Mae inhaled sharply.
"Are you out of your mind?!" Zane scolded her.
