Double update!
I opened the door to Xiu's room.
She wasn't ready yet. Her dress was in bed, beside it all her jewellery with other accessories. Her eyes were staring out of the window, and I remembered the conversation I just had with her alleged boyfriend Liang.
"Xiu never told me about you," I told him when I took him to the corner. He had been fighting with security to let him into the mansion. He wanted to talk to Xiu apparently.
"She is afraid of everyone in the family for some reason." Liang sighed. "I want to talk to your father once. She never tried, but I want to. There's a chance-"
"Did she ever give you a hope of a future? Told you that she would marry you?" I crossed my arms against my chest. "Xiu knows our family position in the marriage matter. It's bizzare to even think of her getting involved into a relationship."
Liang smiled. "You think I'm lying? Yes, Xiu wasn't into relationships. She said no to me the first time I asked her out, so I became her friend." He looked at me and continued. "I wanted her to feel comfortable with me. She hated it when I came close to her on emotional level, and would pull away. I waited. I waited for her to open up to me and she did. She confessed that she loves me but is afraid of your father's reaction."
"So what now? You gotta a death wish?" I shook my head. "My father is not a man who can be convinced. He would rather do anything but bow down to our proposals."
"But, I want to try. I can't let Xiu go, knowing that she loves me back. It was okay until I didn't know her feelings. Now, it's impossible for me to move on and act like she doesn't exist, and is being forced into an unwanted relationship!" Liang almost shouted, his breathing uneven. "Sorry. Just the thought of her with someone else... someone she doesn't want to be with... I can't fathom it."
"You really love her. Don't you?"
Liang held my hands. "You're her sister, right? Xiu loves you and I know you have a soft spot for her too. Please help me. Please help us."
Looking at my sister now, I couldn't believe that she had someone she loved. She looked so peaceful, so accepting of her fate. I didn't like it. At all. Xiu turned to me at the exact moment, and smiled. "Did father ask you to check up on me? I'll get ready. Don't start nagging me," she teased, and got her dress from the bed.
I held her elbow before she could disappear behind the doors. "Are you happy?" I had to make sure that one of the few of people I actually loved wasn't doing thing for someone who didn't deserve it.
Xiu paused. "Happy? Why are you asking that?" Her voice was small, scared.
I nodded, encouraging her to answer my question. "Liang. He's outside."
Her eyes saddened. She opened her mouth to reply when the door opened.
Dad walked in. Xiu visibly cowered under his glare. "Why aren't you ready yet?" He growled, and I came in front of my sister before he could go off on her. "What? You want to create a scene here? I told you already-"
"Why is she getting engaged before me? I'm older than her." I saw mum entering the room too.
"Do you think that you're a marriage material?" Dad huffed. "I would rather not embarrass myself by marrying you to my friend's son."
"I'll be good," I told him. Mum's eyes widened. Even Xiu grabbed my arm. "I'll marry this guy. I'll be the best version of whatever you want me to be. I want Xiu out of this matter."
"What?"
"Give up on Xiu instead of me. I'll be your daughter, the one you want." I shrugged off my sister's hold. "Do we have a deal?"
