I shoved open the front door as I walked into my house. Saying that I was exhausted would be the understatement of the century. I toed off my loafers before I slammed the door shut, only realising a moment later that Gianna must have been asleep. I paused in the doorway, waiting to see if I would hear any footsteps but thankfully, it seemed that she hadn't woken up. Just as I entered the living room, my phone buzzed in my pocket. Irritation colored my tone as I barked a hello into the phone. Who the fuck was crazy enough to call me at 2 in the morning?

"Sergio. It's me."

Of fucking course. My father.

"Hello Father. Everything alright?" I managed to keep my voice neutral, polite even as I addressed my biological sperm donor.

"Everything's okay, son. I just wanted to let you know that your mum and I won't be able to make it home by next week. We're going to have to close the deal on this new contract that we've been offered. Might even take another month or so. You know how it goes with the ass kissing right?"

I hummed a yes as I felt my heart sink deeper. Why was I not surprised? My parents had let me down every single time so far, so why should this be an exception? I could always count on my father to not even be there for his own brother's death anniversary.

"I assume that you're not going to be there for your dead brother's anniversary either, are you?" I asked as my previous irritation seeped into my voice, my tone growing louder.

There was silence on the other end before he let out a long sigh.

"You know I don't -

"Never mind. I don't even know why I said that." I cut him off before he could give me another lame ass excuse.

More silence. Another exhale.

"Alright. Sorry I had disturb you so early in the morning but I figured you'd be awake. Anyways, your mother and I will see you soon, Sergio...if everything goes according to plan."

Without even so much as a goodbye, he hung up on me. No matter how many times this happened, it wouldn't sting any less each time. Riccardo was right...I really was pathetic when it came to my parents.

Rubbing my eyes with the heel of my palm, I let out a short breath as my shoulders hunched. I walked over towards the counter before I angrily slammed my phone on it. I was fucking tired of this. Of them. I tugged at my hair as frustration clawed at my insides. Sometimes, just sometimes, I really wish I had someone in my corner. Sure, I had Nonna. But I couldn't really talk to her about business. Besides, she was getting older and older by the day. I could physically see the energy draining out of her slowly - even if she tried to mask it well. Mikhail was too far away from me and he had a family now. It didn't feel right to intrude on their time together as a family - even if he forced me to come visit them from time to time.
