"We should get going." I said as I turned to face Nonna, exhausted but happy after the day that I'd spent with the people closest to me.
"Absolutely not. It's too late as it is right now. You'll be doing no such thing because you'll be spending the night here - both of you. I've set up your old room, by the way."
I could only manage to nod my head as fatigue took over me. After spending a couple of hours giggling over my lanky and acne filled childhood and teenage photos, Nonna had shown Gianna around the house as I worked and managed to close a couple of deals with the other mafia leaders. A strange warmth filled my chest at the thought of how strong the bond between the two favorite women in my life had become. As much as I wanted to keep Gianna to myself, I loved seeing her laugh and interact with Nonna. I just hoped that my parents would like her, or at least, accept her. Not that it would matter if they didn't, because I'd be making it clear to them that she was it for me. I was going to marry the fuck out of her and make her my wife someday - of course, once she'd finish law school and started pursuing her career, that is. I was pretty sure I could secure her a spot in one of the finest law schools in Italy with my connections.
A satisfied smile took over my face as I leaned back onto the couch, my arm slung around Gianna's shoulder as a movie played on in the background.
"Well, it's way past my bedtime now, so I should get going." Nonna got up slowly as she rounded the corner and headed to her room that was on the same floor since she couldn't climb up any stairs at her age.
"Buona notte, nonna." Gianna chirped as she smiled softly at my grandmother.
"Buona notte, bellissima." She replied affectionately before she turned to look at me.
"Sleep tight, nonna, and don't let the bats bite." I joked as she cracked a small smile at me.
"Get some sleep in, lovebirds." She called out as she left the room. "And don't be too loud." She shouted before she shut the door of the living room.
Gianna only giggled in response, still a bit tipsy from the wine that we had drunk earlier.
"She's quite the woman, isn't she."
I looked down at Gianna's content face, her happiness searing straight through my heart and lighting up a whole inferno inside of me.
"She is. I already love her so much." She sighed contently as she leaned into my body, her hands going around my torso.
I pulled her closer to me as I rested my head on top of her.
"Me too, mia gioia, me too."
Her head snapped up abruptly, almost hitting my chin in the process as I pulled back just in time.
"Why do you keep calling me that?"
"Calling you what?" I asked, feigning nonchalance.
She rolled her eyes, as if she could see right through my act before huffing out a breath.
