1920s Circus Era ⚠️The year is a dead giveaway to the premise of the book
Seokjin watches from the crowd as Ruby sings the last few lines of her song. Her voice carries through the tent, she's never needed a vocal booster. It's incredible and he's been taken with her since the moment they met.
He had heard that she was coming. Everyone knew that they were expecting a fresh face. Their boss told them to be expecting a different face around the camp. It just wasn't known how different the face would be.
A black woman on the camp? An oddity for sure. Even so, she was welcomed with open arms by the rest of them. It was the city folk that gave them the hardest of times, especially Ruby.
She's always been more protected by the others. None of them tolerate disrespect or ill will toward their friends. But Ruby is the kindest of them all, they simply won't have it.
On one of the first nights that she arrived, Ruby decided to explore the camp by herself. She needed to clear her head and figured that it couldn't hurt to take a walk.
She ended up by the lion and tiger enclosures. They sat in their cages and Ruby, being the curious woman that she is, decided to get a closer look. She was reaching her hand out to touch the bars when Seokjin saw her.
He had yelled for her not to do that and frightened her. He stayed with her for the rest of her walk to show her around. By the time they circled back to her camper, he was drawn to her.
The pull only strengthened when he heard her sing for the first time. He felt like he was in a film the way that he got entranced. It happened every time after that as well.
A few weeks later and their fooling around turned into a consistent thing. Now he knows love like no other.
Ruby finishes her song and people clap for her. She's led from the ring and Seokjin slyly exits the tent. He meets her around back and beams when he sees her again
"There's my beautiful woman." He pulls her into his arms and kisses her face.
She giggles and tries to push him away. "Seokjin, stop. You can't do that out here. What if someone sees?" He kisses her neck as the sounds of mens voices are heard. They sound intoxicated and belligerent.
Seokjin lets her go just as they're turning the corner. He pushes her behind him as the men come into view. They whistle at the sight of Ruby and her sheer attire. The only thing safeguarding her are the nipple pasties and tights that she's wearing.
"Well, looky looky. If it ain't the sexy dark skinned girl. Never thought I'd put those words together." He and his friends laugh loudly as they stumble around.
