This chapter, and all subsequent ones, are dedicated to Tom Parker. 1/5th of The WANTED. The reason I started to write. The focal point of so many of my greatest memories. It's been an honour, Tom. Thank you for everything.
The memory of being here with you, is one I'm gonna take my life through. Some days stay gold forever. 🦋

They're all pinned down in their hiding spots for the remainder of the night. At the start, the two groups start up a conversation across the great divide separating them, Octavia and Rory telling them all stories about their lives in space. Eventually, the talking stops and is replaced by Rory and Octavia periodically calling out to each other making sure the other, and the people they're with, are still breathing. Rory tries to keep as busy as one can when you're confined to a small area because you're being pinned down by a sniper. She checks in on Saska and the baby and keeps an eye on Hali's injury, updating her journal on the day's developments and fending off Atlas' concerns for her own injury in between.

Nothing happens during the rest of the night. When dawn creeps up on them, the sky starting to turn from an inky black to a hazy orange and blue, they all let out a small sigh of relief. The hope that their ordeal will soon be over with the onset of daybreak fills them all. But, even as the sun rises, their troubles are still there. The sniper is still on the ridge, still shooting at them, and they're still unable to reach their people still stuck in the rubble.

"We can't wait anymore," Atohl, one of the seconds, says to Octavia. "Our people are dying down there."

Octavia studies the site. "If we can get to the crater, we can tunnel in from the side."

"There's no cover," Caris tells her, keeping her hand pressed firmly against Indra's wound.

Atohl pushes himself to his feet. "I'll do it," he says, running out from behind the concrete wall. As soon as he's out in the open, a shot rings through the village, a bullet lodging itself just beside him. He dives back, allowing Octavia to pull him to safety once more.

Caris moves from Indra's side. "Any other bad ideas?"

"Just one," Octavia mutters, chewing on her bottom lip deep in thought. She releases it, then turns to Rory. "Do you have any of Monty's moonshine left?"
