tomorrow's gonna be a brighter day - jim croce

I can honestly say that I did not expect this morning to go the way it has gone. Hell, I don't even think I could've dreamt of it going this way.

I'm one of those people who barely remember their own name when they wake up, so I was already confused when I opened my eyes this morning. Add in the fact that I was on the floor, and man... I was stumped.

It wasn't until I saw my empty bed and someone throwing up in my bathroom that I finally started putting the pieces together.

Riley.

As the memories from last night came rushing back to me, I bolted upright and was running towards the bathroom as fast as my tired ass could go. In my hurried daze, I nearly tripped over my backpack and hockey equipment that I had scattered across the floor.

I needed to find time to clean my room ASAP.

When I opened the cracked door and saw Riley bent over the toilet, my heart ached for her. Nobody likes to be hungover, and I could tell from the way her body heaved that she felt like absolute shit. But then, when she climbed into my lap and told me that Liam had broken up with her?

God, my heart almost cracked in half.

I had been dumped out of the blue before, and even if your relationship is on the rocks, you still aren't prepared for the pain that you feel. Truthfully, I don't think anything can prepare you for heartbreak besides never falling in love.

Taking a deep breath, I close my bedroom door and walk down the hallway, leaving Riley alone in my room. I'm trying my hardest not to think about her standing naked under the stream of hot water, but fuck, it is tempting.

"Hey man." Codie nods at me and then goes back to picking up trash that is scattered across our apartment's living room.

Before walking in here, I was a little nervous that the place would be absolutely trashed. College kids are destructive, and when you add alcohol to the mix, everything just gets worse. But aside from a few solo cups and beer bottles here and there, the apartment seemed no worse for wear.

"You want any food?"

"Um, yes? Why did you even bother asking?"

I roll my eyes at Codie and begin to move seamlessly around our small kitchen. Grabbing the eggs and a few other ingredients from the kitchen, I quickly get to work making breakfast.

As silly as it sounded, I loved cooking and spending time in the kitchen. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I started making my own meals at such a young age. My mom had tried her hardest to cook dinner for me, but our opposite schedules didn't really make it convenient.
