A few hours after she got her results, Vanya paced in front of her bed, nervously wiping her hands on her pants. Her phone was resting on her pillow and she willed it to ring.
After she had texted Sero, she hadn't gotten a response for a long time and she was practically bursting with the need to tell him. She had already spilled to her siblings in the group chat that she got into UA and they were still congratulating her, based on how much her phone was vibrating. However, she really wanted to tell Sero, if not in person, then on the phone but he wasn't able to call her until he finished his chores. So, here Vanya was, waiting for him to call her and getting more excited by the minute.
The phone barely finished its first ring when Vanya snatched it and hit 'accept call.'
"Sero! Hi!"
"Hey, what's up? Everything ok?" his voice echoed oddly through the speaker, making it sound a bit strangled.
The girl thought that was strange, her phone didn't do that to other people's voices, but continued, "I got something in the mail today." She did her best to sound impassive.
Through the phone, she heard him choke on a breath, "What did you get?" he asked in horribly disguised excitement.
"A little letter from UA," she said with a teasing tilt in her voice, "Apparently they want me."
Sero gasped, "No fucking way!"
"Yes fucking way!" she shouted in response, ignoring all social decorum she had ever learned at that moment.
"Vanya, Vanya, Vanya," he chittered, "I'm afraid you might be my competition 'cuz you see, UA wants me too."
The girl honest-to-god squealed, "You got in?!"
"I got in!" the boy squealed right back.
The two dissolved in a mix of questions, answers, and uncharacteristically excited shrieking. Sero explained how he had gotten his letter just before he called Vanya, apparently getting the mail was one of his chores. He had run upstairs to his room and reviewed his results before calling her, saying that he had a feeling she had just gotten her results as well. They talked on the phone as they both submitted their intent to register form, submitting any and all paperwork needed to get them qualified as intended students of UA. Both of the teenagers let out triumphant whoops when they finished and got to the screen on the official UA website that said, 'Congratulations, you are officially registered for the first-year program at UA! See you in the spring, Plus Ultra!'
Hours passed and the adrenaline wore off, both of them flopped on their beds as they talked about nothing of importance. Eventually, they got tired enough to end the call. They promised to meet up soon before school so they could talk about it more.
As Vanya lay against her pillows, her face ached. She pressed her cheeks tentatively with her fingertips, realizing they hurt because she had been smiling for so long. The thought itself made her want to smile more, but she settled for enjoying the warm and fuzzy feeling that seemed to make the air buzz around her.
At the Academy, she only smiled, laughed, and joked around with her siblings and Grace, occasionally. Never with the employees and never with her father. But after she got to Japan, Vanya spent roughly two months alone. It had been a while since she felt so happy. The girl was surrounded by more people than she had ever seen in her entire life but there was not one person that she was emotionally close to on the level that she was with her siblings.
That was until she met Sero Hanta.
Sero was great, he was funny and trustworthy and someone she hoped would continue to be her friend when they were at UA. Which was why she was so scared to tell him she was a part of the Umbrella Academy.
