He watched them go into her room, smirking at them from afar. He had known about that camera. He knew they would find what he couldn't.
As long as I keep them from their goal.
XX sat, waiting. He saw the leader, Matthias, leave the room. Heading to his car. He pulled out a laptop, then headed back to the apartment.
XX smiled. Once Matt went inside, XX turned the ignition and left. It was time they met a real "ghost". He drove off, to Spellbound Inc.
[Half Hour Later]
He was in position, just waiting for them to finally arrive.
I'm sure they've gotten out of practice to the unexpected happening, these past weeks. Well, that'll change, starting today.
He heard the three coming up the stairs and tensed. Once they entered the vault, he zipped out. Pulling it cleanly shut.
Sam, muffled: What just happened? Did it shut?
Bailey: Yeah.
XX smiled, then slipped silently to the stairs. He waited, for him.
Matt, muttering: What are they doing up there? Goofin' off?
XX: Don't worry. I haven't harmed them. I just wanted some privacy with... the leader of Project: 863.
Matt: Who are you?
XX: Your "ghost."
Matt: So you're the one been doing all this, huh? All the haunting phenomenons? You're just playing pretend?
XX: Correct.
Matt: How? You expect me to believe you did that all by yourself?
XX: Your security is weak. And you... gullible.
Matt: I woulda seen you.
XX: Doubt it. There's so much you haven't seen.
Matt: But why? Why go through all this trouble of making us think we're haunted?
XX: To stop you from turning on the S. P. I. R. E.
Matt: So the S. P. I. R. E. is for good. It IS meant to disperse the antidote.
XX: You'll never find it anyways.
Matt: But how? The writing on the walls? The mannequin? How do you expect me to believe that?
XX: Every Syntec building has its secrets. I know how to take advantage of them.
Matt: So why are you here now? The Absalate?
XX: That? No. You're lucky you're still alive with it hanging around your neck.
Matt: You know what it does, don't you?
XX: Intimately. But it doesn't matter at this point.
Matt: Then tell me this; did the serum bomb go off?
XX: You didn't think it'd be safe with the police, did you?
Matt: What?
XX: You gave them exactly what they wanted. And you thought you walked away the hero...
Matt: That only makes us wanna turn it on more.
XX: To "save the valley and your employees"?
Matt: Honestly, just for spite at this point.
XX: Careful. My next visit won't just be a warning.
Matt: You threatening me?
XX: Not just you. All of you. You don't want that... do you?
Matt: Now you see, we're gonna find the S. P. I. R. E., and we're going to turn it on. And the only reason you're stickin around is cus you know that. You know that we're going to find it. That's it, isn't it? You're staying close because you don't know where it is either and the only way you're going to find it, is if we find it first.
XX felt anger rise within, and he made his way down the stairs toward Matt.
XX: Playing detective is fun, isn't it? The truth isn't as fun.
Matt: I'm not scared of you. And I'm not alone in this either. You're forgetting a major player.
XX smirked, and stared straight into the camera.
XX: That's right... Subject 4. You should check in with them. They don't seem like they're on your side anymore.
With that, he turned the corner and headed outside.
Once in his car, he relayed the scenario over in his head. And he realized he may have given them a clue as to who he was. Or, was it something to distract them? He smiled and continued on his way.
