The festival was so much fun. It was a celebration for the Crown Prince's engagement. I was enjoying all the joy the kingdom was having. So many games and food and dancing.
My mother didn't like coming to the village's party. Father thought there was nothing for us since it had nothing to do with the royal family. My elder brother didn't like parties, thought they were a waste of time. And my younger brother only liked the lavish parties that were thrown at the palace. But I wasn't like the rest of my family.
Father was one of the Counts of the Kingdom that the King trusted. Mother was the daughter of another count. Both of my parents wanted a better life for their children, so they've been teaching us to be what they couldn't.
My elder brother was being taught to be the Crown Prince's advisor. My younger brother was a knight and was trying to become a leader of a battalion and then the leader of all knights. And my mother has been teaching me to be a perfect wife. But I don't mind her teachings completely.
That's why I'm in the village town square where there's a dance party. There's a group of men playing instruments on the edge of the square and in the middle there's a large group of people dancing energetically with partners. I had joined them a few songs ago, switching partners with each song.
That was until a boy my age with a cute bunny smile and big doe eyes became my partner. Unlike some of the other men I've danced with, he actually knew the dances. He held my hands in his and led me through the dance, like the male partner was supposed to.
His dancing made me a better dancer. I tried to add a few more flourishes and twirls so I could be equal to his dancing. The boy and I just laughed and smiled as we danced together. And halfway through the dance, the boy finally spoke to me.
"You're a beautiful dancer!" the boy said.
"Thank you. You're not so bad yourself," I said. "Men your age can never seem to dance to well."
"I don't know if you're insulting me or complimenting me," the boy said with a laugh.
"It's a compliment to you. An insult to any other man," I said.
"I accept your compliment. Any compliment from a beautiful woman like you, means a lot."
"Beautiful? You think I'm beautiful?"
"How can I not see that? I first noticed your dancing and then I noticed your beauty."
"Well don't you have a charming tongue."
"I've been known to have one. But mostly toward older ladies around my mother's age. This is the longest conversation I've had with a woman my age."
"Someone as handsome as you doesn't have a betrothed? That's hard to believe."
"Well does someone as beautiful as you have a betrothed?"
"No. Not without my mother's attempts. Apparently men don't like a woman who speaks her mind and sneaks away from a noble house to enjoy the festival in the peasant village."
I quickly covered my mouth when I realized I was speaking too much. The boy looked at me surprised.
"A noble house? What house are you from?"
"The Ryu family. Count Gi-ung Ryu is my father."
"Ah the self-serving Count Ryu. I know of him. Sorry I shouldn't say that about your father."
"Oh, I know he's a self-serving, greedy man. No need to apologize."
The song had ended and everyone began clapping. The two of us bowed to thank each other for the dance. But the boy also held out his hand.
