Connor and I keep walking and we make it to the vintage looking café that he was talking about. He holds the door open for me as I walk inside. There were string lights drooping down from the ceiling and there were cute black furnishings.
"This looks so pretty," I exclaim as Connor and I walk up to the counter.
"I love it here," he says sticking his hands in his pockets. "Just wait until you try their food."
I look up at the menus hanging from the ceiling, which are chalkboard, and try to decide between all of the different options.
"The bacon, egg, and cheese croissant is the best thing on that menu," Connor tells me. "I get it every single time that I am here."
"I was thinking about getting a chocolate chip muffin," I reply. "I love muffins."
"Can I help you both?" a lady asks coming up to the counter. She gives us a big smile that I return.
"Yeah, just give me the normal," Connor tells her. She taps some buttons on the screen in front of her and then asks what I want.
"I'll have a chocolate chip muffin and chocolate milk," I tell her. She continues to press her buttons and tells us the total.
I reach for my pocket and realize that I do not have any money, since I thought we were going to the cafeteria this morning.
Connor hands the women a ten dollar bill and she gives him the change back. "I'll have it out in a minute for you both."
"I'll pay you back tonight," I say as we both sit down at one of the tables situated next to a window.
"No you do not have to," he says shaking his head. "You did not we were coming here."
A few minutes later she brings us our food and the muffin is just a tad bit huge. Possibly just the size of my head. I pick it up and try to decide how to exactly attack it.
"You have your own 'usual' here?" I ask him as I pick a piece of my muffin off and put it in my mouth.
He nods his head before saying, "Yeah, I come here a lot and Tiff always works here in the morning. So she knows my order."
"This muffin is amazing," I say as I inhale another bite of it. I look around the café and do not see anyone else in here. "Is this place usually this empty?"
"Yeah," Connor answers. "It is a shame because this place so good."
Neither one of us say anything as we enjoy our food and when Connor finishes his sandwich, he leans back in his chair nor nurses his cup of coffee. I debate in my mind whether I should ask him about his snapback.
I decide to ask him about. "You never did tell me what the big deal was with that snapback."
He looks away from the window and his blue eyes lock with mine. Putting his cup down on the table he tells me, "It just was given to me by someone."
"That is it?" I ask as I put the last bite of muffin my mouth.
"Well no, that is not it," Connor says. I can tell he is starting to get a little frustrated with me for bringing the topic up again. "Why do you care so much?"
I drink the rest of my chocolate milk and set the glass on the table.
"Hold on," Connor says standing up and walking back up to the counter. I watch him as he takes out a ten dollar bill out of his pocket and hand it to the girl, whose name I guess is Tiff or Tiffany. She starts talking to him, but I cannot hear from the other side of the restaurant.
She glances over at me while she is talking, and I look down reluctantly. I can tell that Connor looked back at me as well, but I did not look up to meet his gaze. When I look back up, neither one of them is looking at me, and Connor is shaking his head.
She gives him a polite wave and Connor starts walking back towards me. I look down at the table to make it seem like I was not watching them.
"Let's start walking back for class," he tells me as he slings his backpack strap on and strolls out of the door.
I put mine on and walk outside with him. He does not bring our conversation back up, so I am guessing I will have too.
"So about that hat," I say as I start to play with a strand of my hair.
He stops walking and rubs his hands against his face and then asks, "Why does it concern you so much anyway?"
"You are keeping a secret from me," I say as I stop walking and step in front of him.
"I keep many secrets from you," he shoots back at me.
"Oh really?" I ask raising my eyebrows. "Like what?"
"They are secrets for a reason princess," he says as he starts to walk again.
"I told you to stop calling me that," I say jogging to keep up with his fast paced walk.
"Well you will not stop asking me about the hat," he says raising his voice.
"You never asked me!" I say getting mad because I do not understand why he is getting mad at me.
"Then stop asking me about it!" Connor says as he stops walking and turns to face me.
"Okay!" I say doing the same thing and flinging my arms in the air.
He grabs my arm and pulls me into him as he crashes his lips against mine. I could taste the sweet coffee on his lips, and the kiss was surprisingly gentle considering he had come on my roughly.
Connor pulled away and his clear blue eyes pierced into mine, and then he let go of me as he ran his hands through his hair.
"I'm sorry, I'm so..." he says taking a couple steps away from me. Shaking his head, he starts running away from me and towards the classroom.
"Connor," I call after him as I start to jog. "Connor!"
I give up my efforts of trying to catch up with him because he has on Nikes and I have on booties. He is obviously going to stay far ahead of me.
Looking around, I do not know where I am. I pull out my phone and call Bryce. It goes to an instant voice mail, meaning he had turned it off. I go through my contacts hoping I can find someone who goes to this school. I never got Tyler's or Melissa's.
I groan loud and just start walking down the path Connor went and hope I know where I am going.
