We got to class after most of the other kids, and somehow manage to get two of the seats in the front. Jemal must had already dropped Haley off and walked to his class because she was seated in a desk behind us.
"Goodmorning class" Mr.Henderson greeted everyone in his usually peppy tone.
"Goodmorning Mr Henderson" the class said in unison. Usually all the guys liked Mr Henderson because he was laid back and cool. but the girls liked him for his looks.
"Today we have a lot of work to get through, so no playing around. Open up your books to page 69 and work on chapters 4 5 and 6."
Figures on the one day I had a lot on my mind we had a heavy work load. I peered at Jordan from over my shoulder and she looked like she had not intended on getting any work done. So I did what we normally did on a day like this. I took out my pen and ripped a piece of paper from my notebook, and wrote her a note.
hey are you going to the game tonight? I Looked at Mr Henderson to make sure he was occupied, and passed Jordan my note.
its Friday night and no one has asked me out, I have to go to the game so I can find cute guys to flirt with
A minute later her note came flying on my desk . Okay just making sure, I don't want to go by myself. but I really need your advice on the Haley situation. If she gets too close to Jemal than She'll have him for sure. As I was about to fold up the note I saw Haley peeking from behind my shoulder. oh my gosh, I thought panicky, if she saw what I wrote then she would put two and two together and know I like him for sure.
"why did that note say my name" she whispered fiercely
"what did you see !"
"just 'Haley Situation' .. whats my situation"
"mind your business haley"
"it said my name making it my business now tell me"
"over my dead body"
"Mr Henderson Jocelyn and Jordan are passing notes back and fourth, its quite distracting from my work" Haley burst out to the teacher. I immediately felt embarrassed. I couldn't believe she would snoop so low, oh wait yes I could. it was Haley. Mr H walked over to me and grabbed the note out of my hand. for sure he would read it to the class I thought. But instead he took it and walked it to the trash.
"Next I will read the note outloud Ms Brown, and that goes for you too Ms.Spencer" He said sternly to Jordan and I.
I looked back at Haley to see a smirk plastered across her face. I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Atleast she didn't see the note. 30 minutes later the bell rung signaling class to be over. I quickly walked over to the trash can and dug out the note. there was no way in hell I was about to risk Haley digging it out later.
*************FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE BASKETBALL GAME************
The bleachers are so crowded that there is barley any leg room. Jordan left me to go find boys, all I wanted to do was get a good seat. My boy would be out there on the court tonight. And then the school announcer came on;
"Ladies and gentlemen boys and girls, welcome to LaQueen Highs Basketball Game vs Saint Thomas Moore !! and now for the introduction of our players. Antwon Miller, Jamie Fargo, Victor Loo, Shane Cree, Seth Anderson, and The team captain, Jemal Todd !" the crowd went wild at the sound of Jemal's name and I could tell her was enjoying every second of it, he loved the attension.
Swoosh . It was the sound of the beginning of an intense game. Jamie had the ball and cross overed another player from the other team while passing it to Victor and then dribbed it down the court where he gave the ball to Jemal. Jemal took his opening and scores. I Couldn't help but smile to myself. he looked so cute in that uniform.
It was finally down to the fourth quarter and we were in the lead. Jordan had finally decided to join me and was texting on her phone.
"I don't understand how you can be so into these games, I only come for the hot guys"
"I can tell" I said turning briefly to her then back to the game.
All of a sudden someone else took a seat beside me . I looked up to see Haley and her posse.
"uhm yeah ?" I asked in an already irritated tone
"I Just wanted to come over and apologize for early" she said in an unusually sweet tone
"um okay?" it wasn't meant to come out sounding like a question. I was was just curious why she was putting up such a sweet act
"You look really nice today by the way"
ha. I scoffed and rolled my eyes. now I knew she was up to something
"is there something you wanted to ask me?"
"actually yes. I was talking to Jemal before the game..." she paused as if she needed to study my reaction. I gave off nothing but on the inside that new revelation had me taken back.
..."and I asked if he wanted to hang out after the game. he said he didn't mind but he usually chills with you after his game..so he asked me to ask you if you wouldn't mind us doing our own thing for the night"
"Actually ... " I was just about to tell her I infact did mind when the crowd simetaniously jumped up and went wild. Jemal had scored the winning basket finishing the game.i turned back to Haley who was leaving with her posse. "wait" I tried to say but she couldn't hear me over the loud roars.
"Huh ? what was that I cant hear you. did you say great? okay then cya" . And with that she took off.
how could one person ruin my night so quickly?
"Don't worry its only one night" Jordan said reassuaringly
Finally the gym was beginning to empty and I waited for Jemal like I always did after the game to either congradulate him or console him. I saw him walk out of the locker room and ran to him. "you looked great out there tonight" if only he understood how much those words had a double meaning.
"thanks.. so Haley said your cool if I hang out with her instead tonight?" he cocked his head to the side as if to study me.
"well...not..."
Out of nowhere Haley appeared at his side. "ready!?" she asked in a hyper tone.Jemal looked at her than back at me with an undecided look on his face.
"what if we all hung out tonight" he suggested. I couldn't help but notice how Haleys face fell at the thought of me joining them. And then her face looked like she had gotten a bright idea.
"You mean like a double date" of course only she would find a way to twist his words around to make it seem like he wanted to be on a date with her.
"I meant all as friends.. but if that's ok with you Joce then I don't mind, I mean if you can find someone to join you" How sweet, he was making sure I was okay with the plan . I couldn't tell if he wanted me to save him and say no so he wouldn't have a date with Haley, or if he was silently begging me to say yes. all I knew was I wanted to shout HELL NO. but ofcourse I didnt
"Im sure ill find someone" I said with a fake smile plastered on my face
And that's how I ended up In Jemal's car, Haley in the passenger seat and I In the backseat. On Our way to the local in and out. Oh this should be fun,i thought to myself.
