She padded back to the nursery where her kits were waiting, glancing at Berrykit as she walked by the medicine den. Amberheart was sharing tongues with Scurryclaw, Amberheart's mate.

She shivered, remembering the black cat, and how Waterleaf and Dawnstar looked when they had heard about the cat.

It's just one cat. She reminded herself. It's not like one cat can destroy a whole entire Clan.

But she remembered what Waterleaf had said. Several dead bodies. She thought. How could just one cat kill several cats? She stopped, and she shivered. He's probably not alone. There are more of those cats. And if I am right, then our whole Clan might be doomed.

"Mommy, are we going to be apprentices soon?" Honeykit asked sweetly.

"Maybe. But remember that you still have one moon to go."

"Awww," Woodkit cried petulantly. "But I want to be an apprentice now!"

Alderfall sighed. "Listen, you aren't allowed to be apprentices yet, but maybe you can practice. But only practicing, and you can't go out of the camp yet. Deal?"

"Okay, Mom. Thanks!" Reedkit exclaimed. "How about we take Berrykit with us?" He started padding out of the nursery.

"No." Alderfall meowed sternly. "Your sister is sick. Very, very sick. You can't go out by her, okay?"

Woodkit mumbled sadly under his breath.

"C'mon! Let's go practice!" Reedkit cheered.

All four kits sprinted out of the nursery. Alderfall strode out of the nursery, happy that she got a distraction for her kits, and from the cat. She shuddered.

"What are we going to do?" Honeykit asked happily.

"Hmm, lets see," Alderfall thought of all of the things she was taught when she was an apprentice. "Oh! What about hunting mice?"

"Oh, but what mice do we hunt?" Turtlekit asked.

"Yeah, there are no live mice in this camp." Woodkit complained.

"Exactly Woodkit," Alderfall mewed. "We are going to use the dead mice."

"But they don't move!" Woodkit kept complaining.

"Well, one of you could be the mouse." Alderfall suggested.

"Me!" Reedkit exclaimed.

"Go somewhere else, and pretend you are shuffling through the leaves to find food." Honeykit ordered. Reedkit ran to the fresh-kill pile.

"Okay, now!" Alderfall exclaimed.

The three kits shuffled closer to Reedkit, one paw at a time. Woodkit fell over a few times, and Honeykit kept getting distracted. But Turtlekit was excellent, like a real apprentice. Turtlekit pounced on Reedkit, his claws sheathed so they wouldn't pierce Reedkit, and pinned him down, pretending to do a swipe attack, like what a real warrior would do when they caught prey.

Reedkit started wrestling once Turtlekit was off of him. The rest of the kits joined in, tumbling and tripping over each other.

"Good job Turtlekit!" Alderfall mewed.

Just then a yowl sounded from outside the camp. Alderfall jumped up and sprinted toward the noise, and found Scurryclaw and Amberheart bounding into the camp.

Dawnstar came out of her den and looked at the two mates with a serious but worried expression.

"What happened?" Dawnstar asked. Blood trickled down from Amberheart and Scurryclaw's pelts. Once they caught their breath (Which took what seemed like moons) Scurryclaw wheezed "A cat... he-he c-chased us. A-and-"

"Where is Dryclaw?" Dawnstar interrupted demandingly.

The two mates looked at Dawnstar with eyes of agony.

Dawnstar looked back with the same expression. "No..." She whispered.

Amberheart replied, sadly, "Dryclaw's... dead."
