"What?!" Redleaf, one of the PineClan young warriors wailed.

"He was attacked by a cat, a black one." Scurryclaw explained. The eyes of Alderfall, Waterleaf, Dawnstar, and Alderfall's kits, widened.

"What color was his eyes?" Alderfall asked.

"Umm, like, they were reddish?" Scurryclaw managed.

Alderfall, Waterleaf, and Dawnstar looked at each other. Dawnstar ordered, "Amberheart, patrol the border, and bring at least three cats with you. Tell the apprentices to guard the entrances. Sunheart, you protect the elders and the kits. Waterleaf, make sure to be ready if any cat comes back wounded or injured."

They all followed their orders and guarded the entrance or ran out to patrol.

Once all the cats got back, Amberheart raced to Dawnstar. "Nothing to report, just some SmokeClan cats patrolling their territory."

"Ok." Dawnstar replied. She walked to the rock in the middle of the clearing and shouted "Let all cats old enough to climb the bark of the pine gather under Hardrock for a clan meeting!" As soon as she said it, all of the cats walked to the Hardrock and sat, looking up at Dawnstar, whispering about what had happened with the former deputy. Dawnstar silenced them with the flick of her tail. "We need a new deputy." She announced sadly. She breathed in. "I say these words before our warrior ancestors, as well as the spirit of Dryclaw, so they can approve of my choice," She looked across the clearing.

Dawnstar's eyes locked with Alderfall's.

Is she going to choose me? Alderfall wondered. She would be happy and honored to be the PineClan deputy, but she had five kits. It would be very hard to be the deputy. But as she thought about it, it was the perfect choice. She could serve her clan, even once her kits didn't need to be looked after.

"Alderfall, step up."

Alderfall padded to the edge of the Hardrock. She is going to choose me.

"You have served our clan well, by helping us go through the hardest times with your enthusiasm, and helped us battle the fights that we fought with your bravery and strength. You will be a great leader one day." She smiled at Alderfall. "I now name Alderfall the deputy of PineClan!" Dawnstar announced.

"Alderfall! Alderfall!" The cheer spread through the cats. Not one cat seemed like they didn't agree with that choice.

Alderfall stepped up onto the rock that was lower, where Dryclaw had always sat. She mewed in thanks to Dawnstar.

She was buoyant, until she thought about Dryclaw. He shouldn't have died.

Alderfall went to Dawnstar's den once the meeting was over. When Amberheart walked by, she congratulated Alderfall with a purr.

She looked at Dawnstar, who was grooming herself. "Hello, Alderfall." She purred. "Hello, Dawnstar." She looked away, trying to hide the uneasiness that showed, wondering if she could do this job. "Why did you choose me?"

"Didn't I already say?" Dawnstar purred, a little amused. "You will be a great leader one day. You can keep secrets, if they may worry your clan. You are strong, brave, helpful, and enthusiastic. That is what a clan needs." Dawnstar looked worried. "May I tell you something?"

Alderfall was confused. "Sure."

Dawnstar's face brightened again. "I'm expecting kits!" She did a little excited padding, like what a kit would do if he found out that he could have all the honeysuckle they could ask for. Dawnstar stopped with a hugely embarrassed expression on. "Sorry. I'm just so happy!"

"It's ok." Alderfall smiled. "What about the clan? You will be in the nursery."

"Oh, right." Dawnstar's face drooped. Alderfall saw this and meowed quickly, "But I might be able to take care of the kits, when I don't have duties. And when I do, there are, like, three other queens that can take care of your kits."

Dawnstar's face lit up again, like a bunch of fireflies were trapped in her body, bursting out at just the right moment. "Thank you, Alderfall." She brushed her muzzle to Alderfall's.

Alderfall was padding back to the nursery. Where did she sleep? The nursery, or the warrior's den? It would be a little weird for a deputy to go to the nursery. She shrugged. She needed to take care of her kits.

Everything's going to be alright. She thought. She was sure that she saw a black pelt by the brambles that protected the camp. She glanced, finding malicious eyes on her.
