Matt pushes the door open to his office: Nelson and Murdock, attorneys at law, a labour of love and either the greatest decisions to expand his lawyering career or diminish it. But Matt knew all about the game of chances and risks. Over the years it's a game he'd been a pawn at but would like to think he now played at queen status. But somehow, he could neve shake the feeling he wasn't doing enough for his community.
"Hi Matt, you do know you're thirty minutes late, right?" Tess barks at Foggy playfully. "I know he is, isn't he Tess! Isn't he!" Foggy bends down to stroke Matts trusty companion. Matt moves to Foggy's desk and places his pretzel on the table. "Oh, and you're welcome Fogg, also you do know I'm blind right?" Foggy shakes his head "Dude, the blind card excuse is getting a little old don't you think? It's about time he should be retired." Matt gasps "Foggy! I expected better of you, gaslighting the blindman!?" Foggy rolls his eyes and swats Matt with a stack of papers "Well Mr. Murdock, your night time extracurricular activities suggest otherwise." Before Matt can respond Karen walks into the room. "Oh hey morning Matt, Coffee?"
"Hi Karen, thanks. Yeah I'd love a cup."
"So...Today you boys seem to have quite a stacked schedule."
"That's great! How much are they paying?"
"Foggy!" Matt exclaims.
"Ok ok! I know! Justice first money second but it would be nice to be able to pay my bills from this occasionally. Plus, somebody has to keep the lights on in this office."
Matt chuckles. "Don't worry, it will all happen in good time. We need to establish ourselves with the people, treat them like family, show them we can be trusted." Karen strides to her desk in the other room retrieving her notebook. "So, there's Darren White convicted Felon who believes he was framed, Mrs Cardenas who is being forced against her will out of her home... Err Lucy Meyer who was recently pushed out of her job when her company wouldn't extend her maternity leave... And that's just until 1:00pm."
"We really have our work cut out for us, huh Matt."
"We'd better get going then." Matt challenges.
-------------------------------------
Matt sits in a chair in the lobby, loosening his tie. They'd been busy, and this was the best time he found to slip out and have a break from climbing the ladder of injustice.
He smelt her before she was in close vicinity to him. Vanilla with a mingling hint of fresh rose, there's only one person who he knows with that precise scent. Jules. He traces her heartbeat and works out she's heading to the doors to exit the building. "Jules!" he calls out. Jules stands still in her tracks and sees. Him. Facing her standing upright and confident, in a perfectly tailored suit, his muscles slightly pressing against his shirt, combed hair (she kinda wondered how he did that) and he was smiling at her. Beaming at her, with that boyish Matt Murdock grin. She really had missed it. Jules runs over to him and draws him in in a tight embrace. "What!!! Matty it's been sooo long! What are you doing here?!"
"I was just gonna ask you the same thing!"
"Ohh, you know just at a finance appointment." She winks at him and Matt laughs, knowing the undercover secrecy of her job.
The two had been busy in the past six months with Jules being a new team leader in S.H.I.E.L.D, And Matt setting up his practice. They'd shared texts here and there but had never really been able to share the specifics with one and other.
"Well, me and Foggy and our assistant Karen are on level 3."
Jules punches him lightly on the arm "Wow Matty, that's really great."
"Wait!" Jules startles. "How did you know it was me in the lobby?"
"Your perfume, you haven't changed it, rose and vanilla."
"Damn boy, you really don't miss a beat do you." He smiles. "Well, you've been a pain in my ass since the day we met so you're pretty hard to forget" Matt quips. "Ha ha very funny Murdock, I missed you too."
