BEEP BEEP BEEP! Jules lets out a groan in annoyance as she sticks her arm out of the covers to knock her alarm clock onto the floor. "Shit" she grumbles, rolling onto her back to stare aimlessly at the ceiling. She sits up in bed and reaches for her phone on the nightstand. Ten messages. Huh? Who the fuck has something so urgent to say at 6:30 in the morning? She unlocks her phone. Yup of course it would be Jack, her hypervigilant colleague, but he makes insanely good mac n cheese which is probably one of the reasons Jules tolerates him. No. The only reason. She thinks of ways into blackmailing him to make her some, whilst simultaneously reading through his messages.
6:00 am
Jack: Are you awake?
Jack: Hellooo
Jack: ...
Jack: I'm finding your silence very rude right now.
Jack: Come on its urgent!!!
Sends gif of a crying emoji.
Sends gif of a sad puppy.
Wow how creative he is.
By the time Jules had exasperatedly scrolled through the text chain her phone buzzes and lights up with a call from oh no other than the man of the hour, Jack. Jules answers the phone and speaks abruptly before he can get a word edgeways "You know it's very unprofessional bombarding me with messages."
"We've got a situation."
"Oh, so no I'm sorry Jules for interrupting you're peaceful morning and being a pain in the ass who can't style his hair."
"Er what, my hair is fine."
"Really? You're denial levels are impressive"
"No...But no... ANYWAYS, stop trying to distract me there is a reason I've been trying to reach you."
"Huh really I didn't notice." Jules mutters under her breath. "What was that!?" Jules pushes her blonde hair out of her face "Uh nothing Jack just tell me what was sooo urgent."
"There's a hostage situation, it's getting critical, just get here as soon as you can for the briefing."
"Ok I'll be there."
Jules hangs up before he can say anything else. She shuffles out of her bedroom into the main room of the apartment which she shares with her close friend Jessica Jones. She's hunched over her computer muttering frustratingly to herself. Jules figures she has probably been there half the night, due to the dark purple circles smeared underneath her eyes and the half full bottle of scotch on her desk. The women had met when they found themselves tangled up in the same case. Jessica wasn't the most sentimental person, but you could count on her to be there for the big stuff. "Morning Jess." Jules greets as she ambles over to the kitchen to make herself coffee: black with two sugars. "Ughhh hii" Jessica answers slumping in her chair rubbing her eyes. "This guy I'm investigating is such an asshole."
"Really, what's this one done." Jules smiles, finding entertainment in her best friends work anecdotes. Jessica swivels in her chair leaning forward. "Ok so the wife comes to me and says her husbands been acting strange quite reserved doesn't come home to early hours of the morning. I was like...Lady he's cheating on you, you're better off going to a divorce lawyer than me, but boy she was persistent. So, I was like fine ! I'll take your damn case. Then y'know I do my digging as usual...And guess who he's cheating on her with?" Jules bites her lip and squints in concentration. "The secretary?" Jessica shakes her head. "Uhhh college girl friend?"
"Nope."
"Ummm colleague?"
"No" Jessica smiles smugly. Jules shrugs "I don't know, go on tell me then!" Silence. "Jess!"
"Ok! ok! I'm pausing for dramatic effect here." Jules frowns at her as she fights the smile tugging at her lips. "Are you sure you're ready for this?"
"Yes!"
"A hundred percent?"
"Yes!"
"Once I tell you there's no going back."
"Alright then." Jessica pursues her lips. "Her. Frickin. Mother." Jules gasps dramatically not being able to believe what her ears are hearing "Broo, no way that's so fucked!"
"Right!" Jules swats at her arms as if to get rid of imaginary germs. "Ohh and there's more." Jess continues. Jules groans covering her face with her hands. "I've got the picture evidence." Jules stares at her, mouth and eyes pulled open in shock. "Caught them in the act and EVERYTHING. His wife is gonna need a hell of a lot of wine looking through those." Jules walks over to Jess and places her hands on her shoulders. "My dear friend, condolences to you. If there's anything I can do for you in this difficult time, please let me know." Both women look at each other then burst into fits of laughter. "That family therapy is gonna be expensive!" Jules exclaims doubled over in in laughter. "Hey as long as I'm not paying!" Jessica remarks.
