Mila was trying not to stare at Peggy Carter as they walked to the infirmary. She was like a movie star, except even better, because she was a brilliant strategist and operative, too. Mila saw the way Steve's face lit up when he saw her. She saw the love in both of their eyes. The intimacy of their embrace. There was no way Mila would get in the way of them being together.
Peggy was all questions for Mila. Where was she from? What kind of doctor was she? How was it working with the French Resistance? Mila was so tired that she was actually grateful when they got to the infirmary and Peggy left to get back to work.
The medical intake was pretty straightforward. When the nurse asked her when her last menstrual period was, Mila reported "1940, I think?" The nurse joked that she was lucky. After the blood work, urine sample and chest x-ray were complete, Mila sat in the exam room waiting for a doctor for what seemed like forever.
An older man came in carrying some papers and introduced himself as the doctor. He looked through his paperwork and got right to it. "Well, Dr. Abrams, who's the lucky fella?"
"Excuse me?" She didn't follow.
"You're pregnant, ma'am. Is the father still in the picture?" He realized it might be a touchy subject, as so many men were dying in the war.
"I'm sorry, I think there's been some mistake, I haven't gotten my period in years..." this could not be happening. "Can you check again?"
The man laughed. "Confirmed on blood test and urine, ma'am. We can run it again if you really want to."
"No, that's fine." She was getting nervous. "Do you have to inform anyone about this?"
"So that's a no on the father being around, huh?" He chuckled.
"Afraid not, sir..." she couldn't do this to Steve. "Died in Germany."
"Fair enough. Your secret is safe with me...but at some point, you won't be able to hide this." He smiled and patted her stomach.
She flinched. "I suppose not, but there's time to figure things out before that happens, yes?" She stood up and started getting dressed. "Is there anything else, sir?"
"Nope, just take care of yourself, Dr. Abrams. Come see me in a month to check in, okay?" He walked out of the room.
Mila tried not to cry as she sat there in disbelief.
Peggy returned to take her to dinner. "Everything alright, Dr. Abrams? You're white as a sheet."
"Fine, Agent Carter. Just tired. How's the food here?" She was trying to distract herself.
"Dreadful, I'm afraid!" Peggy laughed.
"Can't wait..." Mila sighed.
