There are 171,146 words in the English language but not a single one of them is strong enough to express the level of awkwardness that presided over the entire group. Well, almost the entire group...
"You see, I didn't quite understand how time travel could be possible-" Axel was rambling as they walked through the door into The Eggs' hotel room. "But when you consider the fact that time is perhaps not a man made concept but a solid thing composed of atoms and molecules then the idea of sliding between those atoms isn't so far fetched."
"Fascinating! And that's why so many scientists have failed when experimenting with time–they all perceived it as a sort of abstract aspect of our reality. But, as you said, if it were a tangible field, it would be so easy to manipulate the particles!" Colin held onto every shred of information Axel was giving him with more enthusiasm than he'd ever shown for any other subject in his life. He vehemently believed that his whole life had led up to this moment, even if he could only share it with Axel.
"Exactly! The more you think about it, the more sense it makes!" Axel exclaimed. "Colin, I am so glad to have some to share this with, someone who is on the same intellectual level as myself. Not that I am demeaning my other friends but well, Dae thinks astrology is 'possibly real' and Brooklyn writes poetry so she's intelligent in, as you would put it, an abstract way and Kyle... he's not worth mentioning."
Colin glanced over at Kyle who was apparently struggling with the lock on the mini fridge. "I see your point." Colin turned back to Axel. "Have you tried duplicating the time machine yet? I would be more than willing to help on the project. I'm sure there would be many calculations and we could share the same notes template on google docs!"
Axel sighed, slightly too dramatically. He was learning from the Queen of Drama: Dae Kim. "I would love to, but alas, the time machine is in The Heroes lab." He glanced quickly at Kyle, then knelt his head close to Colin's and lowered his voice. "But if you are willing to come back to Aigeanstown with me, we could get some snacks, take my car and go on a little road trip to Ode and we could try it out?"
"Axel!" Kyle called from where he was kneeling by the mini fridge (that he finally managed to prise open - one of the lesser appreciated perks of super-strength). "Stop spilling Heroes secrets. I still have the suit on, I can hear every word you are saying!"
Colin paid no attention to this as he replied in a low voice, "when are you thinking? I'll start saving for my plane ticket as soon as I get home."
Axel, also ignoring Kyle, murmured, "we go home tomorrow but you could always get a later plane. Would you have the money within the next three months?"
"Absolutely," who needed money for college? He was going to take part in one of the greatest discoveries of all time! Colleges would pay him after this!
"Splendid. I was hoping to maybe begin this before I continue my academic career, but now I can see that this is much more important than any qualification."
"Precisely what I was thinking."
"Great minds think alike, my friend."
"How about your 'great minds' think about how you shouldn't go through with that plan! Or I will tie you both to a chair and force you to watch Hamilton with me on repeat for however long it takes for you to wise up!" Kyle snapped. He opened a can of coke just a little too aggressively and got sprayed in the face with bubbles.
Daniel tossed him a towel from the bathroom. The coke would probably stain the white towel, but it was easier to clean than the carpet if it got messed up.
"Thanks, mate," Kyle said as he began to clean up his mess.
"Anytime, man," Daniel nodded.
Lacey watched the boys with a mixture of happiness and bewilderment. She whispered to Brooklyn, "ankle injuries shouldn't cause hallucinations, right? I mean, did you-? did they-? I'm so confused."
