It had been a hundred years since the treatments had been given. 100 years since the pandemic has been over. Little did they know, the very cure for the Virus would lead to such transformation. It has been a long time since any human has been seen. Now we live amongst the monsters. Monsters we created, the vaccine that they offered, laced with the DNA of animals. This DNA is what caused the mutations. Once thought to be mere fictional stories, now read more like visions of the future. The world is no longer governed in the same ways, the creatures that inhabit it take a more Primal approach. The world is now segmented into territories, marked and claimed by the strongest. As in nature, the world is now run by the strongest, the leaders, the Alphas. The alphas watch over their people like the animals whose bodies take the shape of these people referred to as the pack. Fierce loyalty keeps these packs together; it is frowned upon to be a loner, to be an outcast, to be a lone wolf. Lone wolves are stigmatized. Thought to be more animal than human now, these creatures roam the outskirts of territories forbidden to enter for fear of what they are capable of. Most will choose to live within the pack villages. These packs resemble the Native American tribes. Much like the Native Americans, the people pay homage to the natural world around them. Civilization is now incorporated into the natural world.
Our heroine Ava is a powerful shape-shifter. Ava lived in a secluded village far from other territories, a blanket of unclaimed land a buffer for the outside world. Swamps surround it; the pack living there call themselves the Immortals. A long time ago, the alpha, Grayson, lost any notion of empathy. The passing of his wife, Simone, had taken its toll on the once-beloved man. Distorting his heart, driving him mad. Those unwilling to follow his sadistic rules fled to adjoining packs. Ava was a small child when the madness set in. Her parents hung as traitors after attempting to seek help for the pack. Ava is branded with the title of omega, treated as a slave. They did not consider her to be worth educating. The little school she received before her parent’s death fueled her never-ending search for knowledge. She hides her strength and courage under a veil of submission. She has attempted to escape as a child, learning from each effort, Ava now determined to find her freedom and destroy the ones who oppressed her.
Liam, a strong, devoted alpha, discovers the condition his neighboring pack is living under. He scouts out the surrounding territory, planning an invasion to remove the maddened alpha from power. Nature takes the territories over. The skyscrapers that had once lined the skies were no more. Tall trees take their place. The monsters that replaced humans embrace nature, leaving behind the concrete jungles in favor of real ones. This is the world the story is set in.
