(This is the longest chapter yet. I would read this when you have some time to yourself :))

The warm night air softly blows through your hair. The stone path feels solid under your shoes as you walk up to the tall doors of the mayor's mansion.

After what felt like forever, the town's annual party was finally upon you.

Usually there would be nerves bundling in your stomach by now. Instead, you felt peace for the first time in a long time. You were excited to see your Paris painting on display, and see your friends that would surely be attending as well. But the most enticing thing about the night was him.

You'd been excited about the party ever since the day that William invited himself as your date.

The last time you saw him he had you sitting in his chair with his knife against your palm, ready to cut your skin at any second. The thrill of his hand going up your skirt while you sat on his desk hadn't left your body either. You couldn't stop reliving that night, even though it had almost been a week now.

After that night, William had been consumed with his strange work. You hadn't needed to use the art studio to work on anything since you had finished the Paris painting. Being away from him after being so close to him left a feeling inside you that could only be likened to cement filling your chest. The emptiness in any room you were in seemed to grow the longer that he wasn't there. The promise of seeing William tonight drew you into the mayor's house, luring you through the open doors and pulling you into the large mansion.

There were more people than you expected. A vibrant array of dresses and suits filled the vast room as you stepped inside. A huge staircase with twinkling lights wrapped around the banisters took up the center of the room. You tilted your head up to look at the high ceiling, taking in the dazzling crystal chandelier that hung above the crowd. A familiar voice cuts through the chatter of the guests and calls your name from behind you.

You turn around to see your two childhood best friends, Leo and Nathan, making their way over to you with glasses of champagne in their hands. They wore similar black suits, with matching dark blue ties. It had easily been a few months since you had last seen them, but they looked at you from across the room like it had been years.

"Look at you! You look amazing, dude." Nathan exclaims, the blue in his eyes sparkling in the soft light of the room. You return his compliment with a smile.

Growing up, Nathan had always made you smile. He always seemed to be the goofiest person in the room and had a knack for making friends wherever he went. His short blond curls always bounced whenever he laughed at his own jokes, despite them being humorless most of the time.

Leo wraps his arms around you and hugs you against his tall frame for a few seconds. He'd always been taller than you, ever since the two of you were kids. Leo would roar with laughter whenever he'd make fun of your height. His tan skin was a shade of rich caramel and his thick black hair managed to fall just above his shoulders.

"We can't wait to see your painting tonight. I think you've been working on it since the last time I saw you, actually." Leo smiles.

"I just realized how long it's been since I've seen you guys. I missed you so much!" You could feel yourself radiating with happiness from being reunited with your friends.

"Well maybe we'd see you more if you weren't always with that British guy." Nathan raised an eyebrow as he spoke.

"William? I met him when he first moved here a few months ago. Super hot, actually." Leo turned to Nathan.

"Hot? That guy gives me the creeps."

"He's a DILF. You don't get it, Nathan." Leo sighs, tapping his finger on his glass and drawing your awareness to the many rings that adorned his fingers.
