Isn't it funny?
dying for love?
I'm sure my sacrifice didn't do anything for the war, but I hoped Claire is safe. My Claire.
I opened my eyes. A black infinite room with a light I couldn't find. There was a really shallow puddle of water.
is this really the afterlife? lame.
My body didn't hurt despite being crushed by rocks, I sat and crossed my legs and began to hum that song I've always known. I remember that song from before the Trinity facility I grew up in but before that I don't remember anything. Not even my parents... I barely remember the place I was raised. It was a small rebellion group led by Trinity near the front lines... But it was burned down, I don't remember by who... but the survivors moved to headquarters, there weren't that many that lived anyways. it was bigger there. more room. more people. that's where I met her. Claire. I remember how we first met, when we first confessed our feelings and how it was after a Trinity ball when we kissed, I remember how soft her lips felt, how her smile made me melt inside and make my knees weak. We were just young and dumb but I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. Claire, My Claire. my heart began to hurt. at first, it was just an ache but then it evolved. into something unbearable, excruciating pain. I curled into a ball unable to stop the pain, my whole body began hurting. I don't remember when I started screaming but my throat hurt and was getting sore. I shut my eyes tighter, any second longer and I wouldn't be able to handle this pain anymore.
I opened my eyes and sat up screaming as loud as I could.
Something was shoved in my mouth and a voice scolded me.
"Silence! they'll hear you!" they hissed. The pain began to waver and I slowly looked around. Half of my vision was black but I could tell it was a smelly damp room. While the pain stewed into a bearable pain, I swallowed what the man had put in my mouth and looked up to see a man standing over me, he had weird looking things coming out of his head like... horns?
"Who are you? where am I? What is this place? What happened to me" i ask the man. I touched the bandages that wrapped a good fraction of the left side of my face. They went wet and heavy. I looked at my hand and saw blood. It was a bad wound. The man smiled softly.
"You're in someplace safe. Safe from the king and his damn advisor. You're in the bottom trash dungeon. In my dorm. I am the master Forman for the rubbish in this castle. My guess is that they thought you were dead and picked you up along with the rubble you created upstairs when you were rebelling against Samaihd's mind control," he said moving to pour a cup of tea. I furrowed my eyebrows. Little pieces of the memory came to me, my heart hurt, knowing that I had tried to hurt Claire and the rest of my body hurt based on my rash decision to drop a room on my head.
"They were going to just throw me away? How did I survive?... and- and what are you?" I gestured to the horns. He let out a chuckle offering me a cup of tea. It smelled like something I had never smelled before. I couldn't decide if I liked it or not.
"I am Mod. I am a Drigenife. A race that was sent to extinction by the Order of the Trinity. You survived this disaster because you are one too," he said sitting down in front of me. I shook my head slowly, dumbfounded by what he just said. Me? Another species of being? Not human? Impossible. Ever since I can remember I've been with Trinity, how could they have killed the Drigenifes but not me? It didn't make sense. It doesn't make sense. Plus accusing Trinity of such accusations is absurd!
"No you must be wrong... the Trinity fights for the good of the people, they'd never kill an entire race! And- and I'm human. I don't have any horns or pointy ears or fangs Mr. Mod," I refused. He grinned and nodded agreeing with me. I sat confused, didn't he just said Trinity was bad? Why was he nodding??
"The Trinity fights for themselves, with a witch at the steering wheel. When the Trinity began hunting the Drigenife, many sought to hide themselves or their children to avoid being slaughtered. Many failed. But I assume your parent was a powerful mage, as they concocted a spell to make you appear human to hide in plain sight," he began sipping his tea calming. I slowly began to drink the tea cautionously. It might've not been safe but I was thirsty, dying has that effect. He smiled and stood and poked at the fire.
After a while, he stopped and began to speak. "The tea you are drinking is in fact my own concoction. Meant to repel your spell and bring out your more prominent details, both image and body wise" i looked at my tea cup in betrayal. The stupid cup was empty. Crap! I began to feel around my face for fangs or horns. "You survived because you held large quantities of magical energy sealed within you," he said sitting back down.
"So... I'm gonna look like you?" I asked quietly. He nodded slowly. "Will I get heal quicker?" I continued as I touched the bandage over my left eye. Mod nodded.
"Drigenife have excellent healing properties, your eye will heal well, but your face will remain heavily scarred, as will your mind," he said seriously. "If you are willing to fight against a scarred mind and get stronger, I can teach you how to fight, to learn how to use the strong blood that courses within you," he said eagerly. I raised my hand to my eye. I thought of Claire. How much I want to see her again, and just be held in the arms of the person who loved me more than anything I would do anything. Anything.
"I already know how to fight," I responded arrogantly. He chuckled and shook his head amused at my words, what does this man expect??
"You know how to fight their way, but not the way of your people," he said. "I will show you, and in return, you will help Trinity takedown king Dale and-"
"I thought you hated the Trinity, why would I team up with them if they killed your- our? An entire race?" I interrupted him, confused. Mod nodded.
"While they have killed our people, you cannot take the Infernal kingdom down alone. You need someone as strong as them. Trinity has the capacity of taking down the infernals with the help of you. And once you take down the Infernals, you destroy Trinity and raise a democracy, a republic, a nation lead by the people," he said filled with hope and determination.
"How- how do you know I can do all of this? why can't you do it?" I asked, I felt overwhelmed with all of this prophecy and responsibilities. I couldn't possibly take down an entire kingdom and then the very people that raised me, that fed me, I couldn't take down Claire's mom! How devastating would that be for Claire?
"It's not that you can. It's that you have to," he said with the sense of a prophet. "You're probably the last of the Drigenife. It's up to you to carry our legacy. I am old. I cannot fight entire systems of power. But you can!" He said optimistically. I looked down. I had no other choice. I wanted to learn more about who or what I was. I wanted to be stronger. I've always wanted this stupid war to end. I looked back up at him, fire brimming inside of me, the urge to finally finish this stupid war. I'll do anything do end this.
"Okay, I'll do it."
