Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Trial of Life

Part 5: Isolated Village

Eevee suddenly felt consciousness return to him as he awoke in a hut.
The roof was made out of leaves and the walls were a bundle of logs tied in a circle around them and the only source of light was a candle burning.
He could see a wall of leaves acting as a door.

He saw his bag at the other side of the room and a shelf full of berries each next to it.
'Where the heck am I?' Eevee thinks, trying to grasp at any sort of direction he could find.
His searches were pointless, he can't even see outside.

A Lotad walks into the hut, holding an assortment of berries in the lilypad on their head.
They notice Eevee and flash a quick smile, then turns back to the shelf.
Eevee watches as they sort the berries into their respective pile, and then walk over to him.

"I'm very glad to see that you're alive and well." They say, rolling an Oran berry off their lilypad and pushing it to Eevee.
"Thanks," He says, "Do you know where Poochyena is?"
"They're right behind you." They respond. Eevee quickly turns around to see them.

"Oh thank goodness," Eevee says, "Thank you, again."
"It's all fine, just next time don't go jumping into rivers, okay?" The Lotad responds sarcastically.
Eevee gives a slight chuckle as Poochyena shuffles a bit and wakes up.

"W-where?" Is all Poochyena could say before noticing Eevee right in front of him.
They gasp a little in surprise and start snuggling him as Eevee wishes that Lotad wasn't here.
Lotad chuckles as they turn back to the shelves with all the berries.

"I remember when I was in love, good times." They comment, making Eevee quickly stand up.
"It's not like that! It's just-" Eevee says, too flustered to talk anymore.
"Oh, sorry." They respond, sounding a little unconvinced.

Eevee just stands there, shifting uncomfortably while Poochyena looks around.
"Where is this?"  They say, getting up to walk over to the door.
"You don't know where you are?" The Lotad responds, walking over to a map.

Poochyena nods and watches as Lotad attempts to point somewhere on the map.
Eevee also watches, but after they try to point somewhere for a few seconds they give up.
"Sorry, I kinda can't point somewhere out." They say.

"So what are all these for?" Eevee asks, signaling to the shelf of berries on the wall
"Oh, these are for healing injuries." Lotad replies.
"Of course but, what do they do?" Eevee says.

"You don't know? Practically everyone knows what they do." Lotad says.
Eevee just sighs as they prepare to make some sort of memory loss excuse.
"Wait!" Lotad suddenly yells, walking over to the shelf and start going through the boxes.

Eevee and Poochyena watch in confusion as they grab an Oran berry and Blast seed.
"Sorry for the surprise but, I can't not show this to everyone," Lotad says.
Lotad takes the Oran berry and squeezes it onto the Blast seed

"What are they doing?" Poochyena says quietly to Eevee.
Eevee just shrugs in response and turns back to Lotad.
Suddenly Lotad cracks open the Blast seed causing smoke to pour out of it.

"Woah!" Eevee says, thinking the Blast seed would just explode.
Lotad just stands there, happy that it impressed someone.
Poochyena starts coughing due to the smoke, and Lotad soon follows.

Everyone walks out of the hut and Eevee finally gets to look around.
There is a bunch of huts scattered around the flat plains.
There's Pokemon walking around and just talking to each other.

"So this is the village where you ended up," Lotad says.
Poochyena is too stunned to speak while Eevee is looking around.
"This is a nice village," Eevee says, noticing multiple Pokémon looking over them

"Why they looking at us?" Poochyena says, also noticing everyone looking at them.
"I think it's because you two are newcomers." Lotad says, confused at Poochyena's question.
Most of the Pokémon turn away, overhearing what they said.

Lotad leans over to Eevee and asks; "Is Poochyena not from around here?"
"They were originally feral but-" Eevee starts to explain.
"They were feral!?" Lotad says, backing away from Poochyena.

Poochyena turns over to Lotad causing them to jump a little.
"Why are you acting like this all of a sudden?" Eevee asks.
"Get behind me now!" Lotad says, grabbing Eevee's back leg and dragging him over to them.

Eevee tries to run back to Poochyena but Lotad steps on his tail.
"E-Eevee?" Poochyena says, scared of Lotad.
"What's going on?" Eevee asks Lotad.

"Ferals are dangerous!" Lotad says.
Pokémon from around the village quickly notice what's going on and walk over to Poochyena.
"They're feral?" One of them say, preparing to attack.

Eevee notices Poochyena look around in fear and they prepare to run.
Some Pokémon start charging up attacks thinking Poochyena is gonna strike.
Eevee looks over at Lotad, who's looking away from him, and runs at Poochyena.

Right when he does that, a Pokémon fires a shadow ball at Poochyena.
Eevee tackles Poochyena to the ground causing the shadow ball to hit Eevee directly in the back.
A bunch of Pokémon gasp and Lotad runs over.

Poochyena freaks out, gets up, and runs, taking Eevee with them.
Eevee watches as the village passes by his vision and he can only see plains..
"Where are we going!?" Eevee yells, holding onto Poochyena.

Poochyena stops suddenly, causing Eevee to fly off their back.
Eevee grunts as he lands then stands up to look at Poochyena.
"Poochyena, are you okay?" Eevee says, walking over to Poochyena.

Poochyena stares at him, scared.
"It's okay." Eevee says, trying to calm them down.
Poochyena just collapses as Eevee finally reaches them.

Eevee lays down next to them and notices that they're crying.
"I-I'm not feral." Poochyena says, resting their head on their paws.
"I know." Eevee says, resting his tail on theirs.

Eevee let Poochyena cry it out.
"Has this happened before?" Eevee asks.
Poochyena turns to face Eevee and just nods.

Eevee couldn't help himself and starts petting Poochyena's back.
"Th-thanks" Poochyena says between tears.
Eevee thought of a good idea to get back into the village.

"What if, we go back to the village and help someone with a request?" Eevee says.
"That," Poochyena says, "That sounds good."
Poochyena slowly gets up and Eevee does the same.

They start walking back to the village.
Eevee looks up and notices that night had fallen without them noticing.
He can't help but enjoy the stars and smile.

"Poochyena, can I be honest about something?" Eevee says.
"Sure." They reply, looking up as well.

"You know how Growlithe and Mareep are human?"
"Yes."
"Well, I'm human too, I think."

"I-I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier it's just-"
"No, it fine."
"Thanks, it's just, I don't remember a lot when I was human."
"You do not?"
"Yeah. I just remember I was human before, but now, I'm not."

"Do you want to be human, Eevee?"
"Well, I would if I didn't have Growlithe and Mareep, and you."

"Are you crying?"
"Sorry, that made me happy cry."

This chapter was fun to write, especially that ending, hoo boy.
