Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Trial of Life

Part 8: Jungle Gymnastics

Eevee heard shuffling and woke up.
He doesn't move, feeling something constricting him.
'Is something trying to kill-' He thinks before looking down.

Poochyena nuzzles his head into Eevee's fluffy mane.
They had wrapped Eevee in a cuddle during the night.
Eevee smiles and almost goes back to sleep.

Until he realizes that they're hanging upside down from a tree.
Eevee tries to yell, but his mouth is covered.
Trying to move his paws is also useless, his body tied tightly to Poochyenas.

Eevee squirms around, trying to free himself.
"Mmm?" Poochyena's voice scares him.
They also look around and realize the situation they're in.

Growlithe hangs in a cucoon from another tree branch.
Flaaffy is wrapped up a few feet away from him.
Theres one more ball of webs, which Eevee assumes is the bag.

It just clicks that these are webs.
A spider had wrapped them up, maybe multiple spiders.
Eevee notices some movement above him and looks towards the ground.

Hundreds of spiders are skiddering on the ground below them.
Spinaraks and Ariadoses cover the ground, moving amongst each other.
Eevee is frozen in fear.

Poochyena follows Eevee's gaze and just growls.
The spiders stop and Eevee shakes his head.
Poochyena gets the hint and stops.

Most of the spiders go back to wandering, but a few start climbing the tree towards them.
Eevee looks at Poochyena and they look back, apologeticly.

A Spinarak shuffles down the webs holding the two up and crawls towards Eevee's face.
"Awake?" They say.
"Awake!" The spiders on the ground echo.

The jungle gets filled with thousands of different high pitched voices.
'How many spiders are here?' Eevee wonders, terrified.
He begins shaking just thinking about the spiders.

Paws wrap around Eevee tighter and he looks at Poochyena.
They're cuddling him tighter, trying to calm him down.
"Thank you." Eevee says, muffled by the time webs around his mouth.

That helps a little, until the spiders cover the two snuggling Pokémon.
Eevee freaks out and squirms around, causing the webs holding them upside down to break.
The two tied Pokémon fall towards the endless skittering floor of the jungle.

Poochyena presses closer to Eevee.
Eevee is barely able to maneuver around in the webs to place his body below theirs.
The two hit the spider infested floor and most of the webs shatter.

Fortunately, this stuns most of the arachnids enough for Eevee to get up.
Unfortunately, a few webs were still holding strong between them.
So Eevee's attempt at getting up is foiled by the webs still tied around his and Poochyena's paws.

They both fall over as a few brave spiders approach the two.
The tied together Pokémon somehow get to their paws.
Eevee tries to back away from the Spinarks as Poochyena growls and steps towards them, causing them to fall back over.

They all realize just how uncoordinated these two were together, and all the spiders charge them.
Eevee presses against Poochyena terrified.
A sudden lightning clap makes all the creatures in the jungle stop and look up.

Flaaffy lands in front of the group of spiders with a triumphant thud.
Growlithe lands next to her and sends a plume of fire at the arachnids.
Most of them back away, some burn alive.

"Thanks!" Eevee yells at the two.
"No problem. How did you guys even get in this situation!?" Growlithe asks.
Poochyena tries to claw at a few Spinarks approaching them, which only hurts Eevee.

"Same way as you two!?" Eevee replies.
Flaaffy and Growlithe focus back on fighting the spiders off.
Poochyena and Eevee try again to stand up, only causing them to realize how Poochyena is decently taller than Eevee.

This only makes their attempts at getting up even harder.
Eevee's right legs are still webbed together with Poochyena's left legs.
But through some miracle, they're able to get up.

Poochyena turns to Eevee, and they both exchange a warm smile.
Just as Growlithe lets out a whimper of pain.
They both turn to him, who is being swarmed by spiders.

Flaaffy is also being overwhelmed, which leaves the tied together duo.
"Left leg first..." Eevee tells the gray wolf.
Poochyena nods and they take a single step forward.

It's an extremely slow start, but they're getting the hang of it.
Both Flaaffy and Growlithe send another volley of moves to quickly shake the creatures off them, making the webbed duo's efforts to help useless.
"Just run!" Flaaffy yells, and they all begin running through the jungle.

Growlithe leads the charge, with Flaaffy right behind him and Poochyena and Eevee a few steps behind.
The spiders were quickly catching up to the two Pokémon in the back.
Flaaffy fires another thunderbolt at a few of the arachnids.

"Cmon you two! Hurry up!" She yells.
"We're trying! Our legs are kinda tied together!" Eevee responds.
"They are!?" Flaaffy sounds scared and disappointed.

Eevee's reply gets cut short by them messing up their run.
Both their legs go out from underneath them and they're left to the mercy of the Spinarks.
"Guys!" Flaaffy yells, but can't stop in time to save them.

A particularly fast Spinark fires a string shot at the fallen over duo.
Eevee closes his eyes and accepts his fate.
Poochyena growls and takes things into their own paws.

They spin Eevee so that they're underneath them, breaking the webs around their hind legs.
The string shot wraps around both their chests and locks them in their current position.
Poochyena gets up and starts running again, carrying Eevee underneath them.

Eevee is facing the spiders, and watches them slowly fade into the darkness of the jungle.
"...tail..." Poochyena says, which makes Eevee focus on their tail whooshing in the wind in front of him.
Eevee wonders why Poochyena wants him to move their tail, but doesn't question it further.

Poochyena's tail feels incredible.
It's smooth and silky, almost like scales, but also extremely fluffy.
It completely takes Eevee away from the situation around them.

"E-Eevee... your tail." Poochyena clarifies.
"Oh! Sorry." Eevee lets go of their tail and lowers his own, letting them see again.
They all continue running through the jungle.

Soon enough they reach the edge of the humid forest.
The spiders are long gone.
All Eevee can hear is Poochyena breathing deeply.

Flaaffy and Growlithe lean against each other and continue catching their breath.
"Are you guys okay?" Eevee asks.
Everyone nods, except for Poochyena.

They collapse, squishing Eevee into the grass below them.
"Poochyena!?" Eevee yells concerned.
Poochyena lets out a quiet purr and snuggles into Eevee's tail.

"I am... ok..." Poochyena says before falling asleep on top of Eevee.
Eevee hears Growlithe snicker and Flaaffy sigh approvingly.
"They're pretty resourceful huh?" Growlithe jokes.

He yelps in surprise as Flaaffy grabs him and cuddles him.
"They have the right idea." She says happily and falls asleep with Growlithe.
"...I love you Claire." He responds, also falling asleep in their lover's arms.
