TW: Miscarriage

JULY 2018

You were in the waiting room of your OB/GYN's office, waiting patiently for your husband to join you from parking the car. It was your 16 week scan. You smiled softly as you rubbed the bump on your stomach when Aldrich walked in. It had been raining so his shoulders and the top of his head was wet from the rain.

He walked over to you, a bright smile on his face as he sat down next to you. "How's our little munchkin doing?" He asked softly, as to not disturb the other pregnant mothers around you.

"He's going alright." You smiled, leaning over slightly and kissing his cheek as he grabbed your hand. He returned a kiss to your head as you leaned yours on his shoulder.

"You think it's a boy?" He asked, closing his eyes as he took a deep breathe.

"Don't you?"

"I think it's a girl." He replied.

"Elaine Killian!" The nurse called. You stood up, allowing Aldrich to place his hand on your lower back as he grabbed your purse from you and flung it over his shoulder. "How are we feeling today, momma?" She asked.

"Pretty good. How are you?" You replied with a smile.

"Busy, but good." She led them back into an examination room. "If you'll just lay here, the doctor will be with you shortly." She said, closing the door behind her.

Aldrich helped you onto the table, tightly gripping your hand. He was excited; he couldn't stop the smile that spread on his face as he kissed your hand as he held it in his.

A few minutes later, the doctor came back in. She had a smile on her face as she saw you. "Elaine!" She said, setting her clipboard on the side counter. "How are you feeling? Any more morning sickness?" She asked.

"That finally stopped last week, thank god. I can finally keep something down." You replied, fiddling with the edge of your shirt as you spoke.

"Well, good. If you'll just lift up your shirt for me, we'll get started." She put on a pair of gloves before she started prepping the gels and the ultrasound wand. "This is going to be a little cold." She said, squirting it onto your growing bump. "Are you ready to push this one out in December?" She asked. Your due date was December 22nd, three days before Christmas.

"Yes." You hummed as you felt the cold. She pressed the ultrasound wand against your stomach, immediately finding a strong heartbeat. "There's the little one." She turned the monitor to you and your husband. "All 10 toes and fingers." She smiled, looking over at them. "Do you want to know the sex?" She asked.

"Yes, please." You replied, staring at the black and white pixelated picture on the screen.

She moved the ultrasound wand over your belly, changing the angle. She pointed to a spot on the screen. "This-" She made sure you were looking, "is not a toe." She paused. "You're having a little boy!" She said with a smile.

"A boy?" You wanted to make sure you heard her correctly. She nodded with a smile. "It's a boy!" You looked over to Aldrich who had tears in his eyes.

"Oh my god." He said, wrapping his arms around you in a hug. He kissed you softly, as you both started to cry.

The doctor smiled as she watched you two so completely in love. "Everything looks perfect. If anything comes up, remember to call me, okay Elaine?" She asked.

You nodded, looking over at her. "Thank you so much. I'll see you in two weeks."

"See you in two weeks." She smiled, walking out the door.
