"When they're gone, it will hurt,
but that hurt will remind you of
how much you loved them."
— CastielONE YEAR AFTER
DEAN WINCHESTER'S DEATH"IS THAT ALL for you, sir?"
Sam Winchester was pulled from his thoughts by the feminine voice that caused the cloudiness within his mind to be sent away. He was drawn back to reality; the remaining reality.
His brown eyes softened as he smiled politely, watching as she placed his mug of coffee on the table before him. "Yes, thanks."
The waitress nodded and walked back towards the kitchen of the diner. Sam inhaled through his nostrils as he sipped the hot coffee carefully, swallowing the warm liquid. His mind was starting to drift again, because it always did.
A soft whine beside him caused him to turn his head. Miracle, Dean's former dog, sat in the booth beside him and stared at him. Scoffing, Sam reached out and massaged the dog's ears as he so gladly wanted.
"You're lucky they even let you in here." Sam said to him. He slid his plate over with the remains of his breakfast, and Miracle quickly licked the plate. Once empty, he pushed the plate to the end of the table.
Sam clenched his jaw as he focused on the date.
"How has it been a year already?" Sam asked Miracle. The dog positioned himself comfortably beside Sam, resting his head on his owner's lap. Sam frowned and stroked his head. "I miss him too, buddy."
It had been a full year since his brother died in his arms, the final death Dean Winchester had within him. Castiel was gone, and Jack was on to bigger, better things.
All he had left was himself.
Sam often looked back at the night, and how things had gone down. Of all things, he had lost his brother to a blood-sucking monster's strength.
"My baby brother."
Sam closed his eyes for a brief moment and exhaled. He never wanted to be alone again, but he was unable to change his brother's fate. His brother was at peace, and it's what he wanted desperately.
Sam pulled his wallet from his pocket and pulled out a five dollar bill and some change. After setting it on the table, he slid out from the booth. "Let's go, buddy."
Miracle followed Sam out of the diner.
Sam decided that because he wasn't tired, he would take Miracle on a walk. Night had arrived, and the temperature was lowering to the thirties. He shivered slightly as he walked, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his jogger.
"You're a fuckin' creep, lady."
Sam slowed at a normal walking pace as the bushes ruffled several feet away. Miracle stayed beside Sam, staring ahead as the brush moved.
"Please, please, you don't understand!"
"I understand that you're a crazy bitch!"
Sam pulled his gun from the band of his sweatpants and approached the bushes.
"Please! No, please!"
