~

Inej was rapidly knocking on your window and
you could hear Kaz's cane slamming into the
stairs. It alarmed you, to say the least.

You ran to the window to unlock it and let Inei
in. Her eyes were wide with something you
didn't see very often: fear. She didn't say
anything initially. Just held you close, tight
enough to slightly restrict your breathing. Her
head fell to your shoulder and breathed in.

Kaz finally barged in and Inej let you go. She ran to your small closet to grab your bags. He
slammed the door behind him.

"We have to get you out of here." You could see
Inei's fear mirrored on Kaz's face. Something
bad had to have happened to get the Bastard of
the Barrel and the Wraith running home. He
joined Inej with packing your things.

It was too much for you to process so quickly.
You wouldn't ask them to stop and explain, they were more than capable of speaking while in a rush. "Can one of you tell me what's going on?"

Kaz stopped for a split second to stare at you,
eyes soft but jaw tense. "You're not safe here.

The pain in his voice was evident. Inej even
looked up to reassure him that we'd be alright.
No place in the barrel was safe, but the Slat
came close to feeling like a home that was as
warm and safe as you can get here.

"That doesn't explain anything." You waved
your arms around in hopes they'd see your
desperation. Just a few minutes prior, your only thoughts were if the two of them would be back soon and if you'd have to patch them up. And now you were worrying for your life.

"Jesper and Matthias are gonna bring you to a
safe house," Inej's mouth tightened into a thin
line.

"But why?" You grabbed a few toiletries, giving
into the fact that you should at least help.

"So you won't be put into the line of danger
because of us." Kaz wouldn't look up at you, his
eyes refusing to meet yours. There was a slight
tremble to his hands, though you couldn't tell if
that was from stress or the pain that he might
be in from running home. You wanted to walk
up and console him, hold his gloved hands in
yours, and tell him that you all would figure it
out.

Instead, you knew better than to argue and
interrupt. So you quietly helped with the few
bags.

As Kaz zipped everything up, Inej murmured
something that could only be a prayer. Once
she finished. she slid one of her knives out and
handed it to you.

You had some of your own, but they weren't as
sharp and lightweight as hers. She must have
been truly worried for you if she was handing
over one of her most treasured items. Fear and
gratitude argued inside your chest, fighting
over which one should lead.

You didn't have time to figure out what to do
next. Inej hugged you again and whispered a
small,"I love you," before handing you over to
Kaz to walk you downstairs.

"I'll keep an eye out on the streets from above,"
she stated. Kaz nodded in thanks. The next
moment, she was out the window again.

He already had the two bags on his shoulders.
"Jesper is downstairs, and Matthias is waiting
outside." The fear in his voice was gone, no
quiver, just unwavering determination. He was
thinking of revenge now. His mind, no doubt,
flooded with a plethora of ideas of what could
happen and what he would do about it.

Before you two rounded the corner, he stopped
you. His hand quickly came to your shoulder. "I won't let anything happen to you." You both
knew this. In fact, all of the crows knew this. It
was common knowledge that if anyone even
looked at you or Inej funny, they wouldn't have
eyes to see at all.

But this felt different somehow, more loaded. It
wasn't just a promise of safety. No, this was a
declaration of love. A promise full of so many
words he couldn't think to say aloud. That was
enough for you. He was doing all he could.

You went to speak again, but his eyes closed
and he took a deep breath. You weren't sure
what exactly he was doing but you wanted to
give him the space to go through with it. All
thoughts vanished from your head as Kaz
leaned in and kissed your cheek. It was small,
barely there. Yet it filled your heart to the brim.
Your love for him poured out of you, flooding
your chest like a dam breaking open onto a
town.

You smiled and tears filled your eyes. This was
such a big step for Kaz. No doubt that this was
probably something that weighed his mind
down while considering it. You wanted to thank him. For allowing himself to open up to his vulnerability and to let you be the recipient. But he was already moving down the steps, gloved hand in your bare one.
