Summer had soon come to pass as the trees faded from vibrant green into a soft yellowy-orange, showing that fall had arrived. Harry had enjoyed the long summer and had loved the lazy days with his parents. Unfortunately, summer can never last forever. The arrival of fall had signaled the beginning of the school year, something all three was quite nervous about. Harry was, to a degree, oblivious to the upcoming event; however, Sirius and Remus were racked with the idea of Harry being apart from them all day, around people he didn't know, and people who knew him. The son of Lily and James Potter was unmissable, from his forever messy black hair to his shining emerald green eyes. He was bound to be recognized by anyone in the wizarding community, and if not by the visuals, his name being spoken aloud in the classroom would spark the revelation of who he was to all children in the room. This was why the parents were leaning more towards a muggle school.
Harry wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway, besides, he would be receiving the same educational milestones in the first few years. The alphabet, simple math, and right from wrong. He didn't need to be in a magic school from the get-go. They could ease into it, couldn't they?
"You know, Remus, I've been thinking about this whole school dilemma..." Sirius said as he brought the werewolf a cup of tea. Remus sat on the couch with a book in his lap and the radio on low volume. Sirius sat down and crossed his legs, sipping his own mug of tea. "I mean, we all know how young wizards are with their magic at such a young age. They are reckless, have no control-"
"You mean like how you are currently?" Remus chimed in with a smile. Sirius rolled his eyes and lightly smacked the other's arm, rolling his eyes at the joke.
"Ha-ha. But, you do know what I mean, don't you? I mean, just think about the phone call! 'Mr. and Mr. Black, I am calling to report that your son has broken this, and destroyed that, and I can't believe I am saying this BUT did it all without touching anything!'" Sirus said in a pitchy voice, attempting to imitate a female teacher. "We wouldn't have to deal with that at a wizarding school. Muggle schools are too risky. Besides, what about the fact that kids run their mouths! We do magic around him, he knows about you and me! What would the other kids think of him saying 'my dad can turn into a big dog whenever he wants! Oh! And my papa turns into a werewolf every full moon! Want to have a playdate?' It is too risky Remus!" Sirius exclaimed, obviously working himself up. Remus sighed,
"I think you're overreacting quite a bit, love. First off, I don't think Harry would be the kind of kid to destroy things, especially in public,"
"Accidents happen all the time Remus!" Sirius said, attempting to add more before Remus put a finger to his lips,
"You had your chance on the soapbox, it's my turn. Now, as I said, I don't think Harry is the kind of kid to break things or react that way if he was angered or anything like that with his magic. We've hardly seen it used here as is. And kids tell stories of make-believe like that all the time. Half the time kids themselves say that they can do extraordinary things like that. It's called playing. Having an imagination. I think it would be best to have Harry in a public primary school, less of a chance for him to get harassed for his story of stopping you-know-who at such a young age. We don't talk about it at home, I don't exactly want strangers talking to him about his parents' death when his own fathers don't at such a young age." Remus said as he took a gulp of his tea. Sirius took the information in and thought for a moment, before slowly nodding.
"You make good points..."
"I always do, don't I? I wasn't top of my class for nothing," Remus smiled cheekily. "Besides, at wizarding schools at this age they don't even begin spells and the such until they go to Hogwarts, we can teach him to control his magic here at home. The world is going to be cruel no matter what, we should start him off for the first couple years in a muggle school, at least until he's old enough to understand what happened to his parents." Remus said as he closed his book and got more comfortable in his spot on the couch.
Just then, Harry ran into the room with a young ginger boy at his heel, both squealing happily as they played. Sirius watched with an amused grin, Remus shaking his head, "no running in the house boys! I don't want anyone getting hurt!"
"Yeah, you hear that boys? The old man doesn't want you having fun!" Sirius teased and looked over at Remus,
"Old? You're older than me by almost 4 months!" Remus said incredulously. Sirius only chuckled as the boys went back upstairs. A look slowly came over Remus' face, "Harry will be so upset if he doesn't go to the same school as Ron..." he said slowly and looked at Sirius, who slowly gained the same realization.
"Shit... I guess I'm right then, aren't I? Wizarding school it is!" He said with a victorious smile.
"Hang on, hang on, I never said you were right-"
"You don't have to Moony. I'm right, and we can't separate best friends like that." Knowing that he had won the argument, Sirius said, regardless of Remus vocally agreeing. Friendship was incredibly important to the two men, especially after the betrayal by Peter and the death of both Potters. Remus didn't want to cause Harry to go through more loss, especially at such a crucial age.
"Alright... Well, we may as well take the two munchkins back to school shopping then, at least let them blow off some steam outside of the house." Remus said and stood to go and grab the boys. Sirius nodded in agreement and stood to stretch, popping his back. He gathered the mugs and went to wash them as Remus rounded up the boys and got them ready to go shopping.
((Hey guys!! Sorry for the long break! I know I keep saying "I'll get back to writing!" and "You'll have a new chapter soon!" But the truth is, I have been having a hard time allowing myself to keep writing this book. I started this book as a bored and Harry Potter-obsessed teenager. I'm now almost 21... I know there is nothing wrong with writing or reading fanfictions at this age, but between school, work, my relationship, and real life, it's hard to keep the motivation. As devastated as many of you may be to hear this, this very well be the last chapter I add to this book. It hurts me to say that as well because writing this chapter reminded me of why I began writing in the first place. I enjoy writing, I love writing. I may not be the best or most frequent with it, but I miss it. I do have some ideas for where to take this, but at the same time, it would be a hard job of rewriting JK Rowling's books once Harry gets to Hogwarts, so I might just leave it at him starting school, but I'm still unsure. I guess we'll see where it goes once I decide if I add another chapter. If I decide to, you'll see a new chapter soon. If not, I will let you all know, and mark the book as completed so you don't keep hoping for something when there will be nothing. I know that feeling, and I don't want to leave you all hanging, especially since I vowed to myself not to be that writer.
Thank you all for the love and support. I love each and every one of you, especially those of you from the beginning. I will let you know what I decide soon. ❤❤❤❤
