The holiday months had passed and winter had quickly started melting into spring, giving rise to green grass, new foliage on trees, and beautiful flowers sprouting from the thawed earth. Harry and his dads had become accustomed to the challenges of their new ways of life and were now your everyday family. Harry wouldn't trade what he had for anything now, but there was one little thing that was always sticking out like a sore thumb to Harry, Sirius took Remus to the "doctors" once a month because of Remus's "illness". It was weird to him because Remus always appeared very healthy, apart from his faint scars and how pale he looked at times he had to leave for the "doctors". This was one of those nights.
Harry wanted to go this time. He walked hesitantly to his father's room, Remus always got very touchy when they had to leave, and it was worrisome to Harry, but even so, he wanted to go this time, the constant babysitters had gotten tiresome. He gently knocked on the door and got Sirius's attention. Sirius opened the door and smiled down at Harry, "what's going on pup?" He asked, slightly concerned due to the look on Harry's face. The young boy cleared his throat, trying to find the voice to ask the burning question he was sure he already knew the answer too. "I was hoping that I could go with you and papa this time?" He asked quietly, looking up at Sirius with big doe eyes. The older man sighed, "we go alone for a reason Harry. It's not safe for you to come with us. Besides, you've never complained about us leaving before. It'll be quick. Papa and I will be back before you know we're even gone. I promise." Sirius assured, earning a pout from the young boy.
"It's not fair!" He said loudly, crossing his arms across his chest. This time, Remus huffed and walked over to Sirius and whispered something to him. Sirius drew a serious expression,
"He's a kid Rem. He doesn't need to know that stuff yet..." Sirius mumbled, turning to plop down on the bed, hoisting Harry up and into his lap, "Just a few more years Rem, then we can tell him." Remus shook his head at that and walked out of the room. He hated lying to Harry, he didn't want to do it, and Sirius certainly didn't help the bubbling guilt. He pondered the situation over in his mind, feeling his skin crawl and feel the inward tug of his bones signifying that his change was near, as he sipped on a mug of coffee in the kitchen. It wouldn't be long until he needed to get to safety. He set his mug down with a heavy sigh and rubbed his face. They had to tell him. Then he would understand why he couldn't come.
Remus walked back up to his and Sirius' room. he walked over to the dresser and pulled a chocolate bar form within, opening it and eating a piece of it. Sirius was laying back on the bed, Harry sitting on his abdomen as they talked about Quidditch. Remus moved to sit beside Sirius on the bed, taking a second to push his fingers through the long and messy black hair, giving him a look that said they needed to come clean. Remus turned to look at Harry and cleared his throat. "Harry.. There is a very serious reason as to why daddy and I go alone. Daddy can help me when I'm sick, and he won't get the same sickness that I have. You don't have that same protection, and if I get you sick, you'll be sick for the rest of your life..." Remus tried to explain without saying Lycanthropy or that he was a werewolf right out there. He didn't want to scare Harry. "My sickness makes me get these scars too, that's why I have them."
"How can a cold give you scars?" Harry interjected, looking at Remus with a determination to understand. Sirius cleared his throat and sat up,
"Har, this is a lot for you to take in all at once. Papa and I just need you to understand this and we'll go from there... We can explain a lot of this when you're older. Papa and I need to get ready to go, though, okay?" Sirius asked, a small frown on his face as Harry shook his head 'no'.
"I wanna help you!" Harry said and climbed off of Sirius to sit in Remus' lap. "I wanna help you, papa." He said and looked up at him. Remus sight and gently pat Harry's back.
"I'm very touched that you want to help me Har, but there isn't anything that you can do... My sickness is called Lycanthropy," he said finally, after a very long pause. "This means that when there's a full moon, I change. I get scary and I might hurt people, so Daddy comes with me to keep me safe and from getting hurt. It isn't a good thing for you to see, especially since you're so young. The best way that you can help me, is by being a good kid here. I need you to behave and take care of our house here while I go get better. " Remus said calmly, looking at the wall in front of him. Sirius watched him cautiously. Remus' emotions always got out of wack when the cycle hit. Harry sat quietly as Remus spoke and then nodded.
"I can do that papa. But you be safe for me, okay?" Harry asked as if he were in any position to be negotiating. Remus chuckled and smiled down at him.
"Of course Har. I'll be safe." He said and kissed the mop of messy black hair, smiling as Harry climbed off of him to allow his father's to get packed, and leave. Harry sat in his room and hugged both men before they left him with the babysitter. Harry waved out the window and watched them leave, remembering his promise to Remus as he went down to spend time with the baby sitter.
