Chapter 3
We walked quietly to the elevator. It was about to close when a young girl, about 15, put her foot inbetween so it would re-open. "Thanks." I said. "No problem." I had been thinking about the ring. Who would watch Kaleb while I'm there? Hmm. I wonder if I could get this girl to watch him. "Excuse me, Miss?" I said. "Yes?" "Are you a babysitter?" I questioned. "Um yea, I watch the Hemmingway's son often. Why do you ask?" She replied. "Umm.. Would you be interested in watching my brother on nights that I work?"
"Umm, yea. Sure." She got out a pen and wrote her name and number on it. "Here is my number." "Thank you. I need you this Monday, for sure. I pay 10 bucks an hour." Her face lit up. "Yea I'm free. I can't wait. What apartment?" "Penthouse, top floor. Thank you so much." The elevator stopped at the parking garage. "Bye." She waved. And I returned the wave.
I didn't want Kaleb to find out about my job yet, he is still to young. I popped open my trunk and grabbed my helmet, and his little kid full faced helmet. It was cool that they matched. They were both black and red.
I attached the backrest that had a buckle to make sure Kaleb was safe. I placed Kaleb on the back of my bike, buckled him in, then I got on. I put the keys in the ignition, and started it. "You holding on?" I felt his grip around my waist tighten, then I felt a nod against my back. We pulled out of the parking garage, heading towards the library.
Kaleb had been on my bike tons of times, he gets a kick out of it when I drive him to school on it. All the little kids stare. Well, they stare regardless if we're taking the car or the bike.
We pulled into the area's public library, and it was huge. Looked like 5 floors, and completely full of books. Wow. Kaleb is probably in heaven right now. I glanced at him, he had just pulled his helmet off. He was staring in awe. "Hey bud, come on. Lets get some library cards." "Okay!" He said handing me his helmet, then rushing in the library doors. I had his helmet in my left hand, and mine under my right arm. I walked quickly to catch up with him. He had already made his way to the kids section, which was half of the first floor, leaving me to get our cards.
I walk over to the front desk, there was a lady in her early 40's behind the counter. "Umm, excuse me, ma'am?" She looked up from her papers. "Ohh, yes. Hello, what may I help you with?" She replied sweetly. "I was wondering if my brother and I can get library cards?" I asked. "Oh, yes. I just need you to fill out some papers real fast." She looked around for the form. "Oh, okay." I said taking the papers from her, then sitting down in red, plush arm chair.
I filled out the papers in about 10 minutes. And handed them back to her. "Thank you, darling. I will have those cards right up." She said typing quickly into the keyboard. Within 3 minutes, both Kaleb and I had new library cards. I still haven't seen him since we got here. Better go look for him.
I walk through the children's section, still not seeing him. Maybe he is up in the teen section. Sometimes he likes to read my books. I walk quickly around the study cubicles. Seeing as how I didn't watch my step I tripped over something on the floor. Bracing myself with my palms, I twist over to see that I had tripped on a backpack lying on the floor. A guy comes running up to me out from in-between a shelf.
"Omigod! Are you okay? I really need to watch were I put my stuff. Sorry." I look op at his face from my spot on the floor.
He is tall. Really tall. He towers over me by at least a foot, maybe more. He is tan, with blond-ish brown hair. He has his hand extended out to me, to help me up. I get up on my own. "It's no big deal." I say as I pick up the fallen helmets. He just stares down at me. I start to walk away when he says "So what is your name? I have never seen you here before. I'm Seth."
He extends his hand, expecting me to shake it. "Tori. I'm new. Good for you." I reply quickly. "Well maybe I could show you around some time? You goin' to Ridgemont High? " He said ruffling his hair. "I don't think so, and yes." I reply turning around, and walked away. Well that was odd. He was nerdy, but cute. Like little brother cute, or puppies kind of cute.
~Seth's POV~
Wow! She is beautiful. I feel really bad that she tripped on my bag. I wonder when I will see here again. She is so... petite. I could pick her up easily. She looked delicate, but her body language said she is strong. And those eyes. Those glowing green eyes, paired with her long, wavy black hair. She looked like a goddess, the goddess of Mega-Badassness. I can't wait to see her again.
Shit. I need to get home. I'm going to be late. My parents will be pissed if I'm not home on time.
~Tori's POV~
I kept wandering around the library. Then I stumble apon a pile of books with legs. "Kaleb! Are all those books really necessary?" "No. I'm only getting 4 today. I brought my backpack so we can bring them back." He said as he set them down on a near by table grabbing 4 off the top and handing them to me. "Hold these, I'm going to ask if she can hold the rest." I followed him to the counter. "Can I up the these on hold?" gesturing to the books on the table. "And check out these 4?" he asked politely. "Sure, hun." I handed her the books, then handed her the card. After we got them back I put the books in his back pack, and we walked towards the door.
I grabbed for the handle, and so did another hand. It was Seth. He held the door open for Kaleb and I. We walked through the door. I got to my bike, and he was still looking at me. I put Kaleb on the bike, and then got on myself. I fired it up, then winked at him before twisting my hair up to put on my helmet. We left the parking lot, and headed for home. Seth's face was beat red.
~Seth's POV~
Did she just wink at me? I think she did! She is so into me. I like her, a lot. Maybe I should tell her what I think of her. That might scare her off. Maybe I should try to be friends with her first. Then tell her later. Yea, that might work.
Why am I still standing on the side walk? I need to get home. Soon. Otherwise I'm going to be grounded another two months. That would not be good. I'm supposed to get ungrounded this Friday.
School is one more day away. Now I actually have something to look forward to, considering I have AP calculus this year. I hate calc, but it looks good on a college application. So do all the other AP courses I am taking.
My parents want me to go to Harvard, but I want to go to Yale. Yale has a great medical program. My parents are lawyers and want me to be one also. I want to be a neurologist.
One of these days I have to stand up to them and tell them what I want.
One of these days. But not today.
~Tori's POV~
Kaleb fell asleep shortly after we pulled into the parking garage. I had to carry him upstairs.
Thank Jesus they put an elevator in this building. I opened the door to our home and carried Kaleb into his room. Careful not to wake him, I put him in his bed. He look so peaceful, he didn't stir at all. Walking out of his room I gently closed the door behind me.
I walked back to my room, and grabbed some shorts and a tank top. I walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower. I stripped and let the warm water engulf my body. Relaxing my sore muscles.
With every minute I got more and more exhausted. I was almost asleep by the time I got out. I threw on my clothes and collapsed on my bed.
I was out.
