We finally got to the middle school which wasn't really far. We had to stay outside though because the middle school was under construction and there were no rooms available for an entire high school to stay. Obviously.
We were free to wander around after a few announcements the principal, Mrs. Caldwell, gave us.
Here's what she said:
The school had an electrical problem because some construction workers hit a line that caused the power to go dim but not noticeable until one hall way (the 900 hallway) had become entirely dark. That's when I alarms went off. We had to be evacuated immediately because the electrical cords and the water from the sprinklers along with the smoke was a bad combination. The damage was that bad that we had to leave Old Oak grounds and go to West Mills Middle.
Then she said that we could be taken home because it would be a while before the school could be repaired. Then we were set free. I didn't want to text my mom asking me to take me home because I wanted to be with Cole.
What a great reason, I thought.
I never saw Cole text anyone so I assumed he wanted to be with me too.
I saw Hannah go home immediately as soon as the announcement was made so that left me with no one else but him so.. He led me to an old tree and there it had a bench with a great view of the "middle school cafe" we sat together, still holding hands.
"So Emma..." He says shyly...
Oh my god. He was the one talking to that guy. About me, I thought.
It all made sense now...
"Yes?" I say trying to make this easy for him.
"I know. I've only known you for a class period and 15 minutes... But..."
My face turns a little red and my hands start to become sweaty. Oh no..
"You seem really shy about this..." I say trying to lighten the mood.
"This is so hard to ask... But... Uh" he fumbles and becomes really nervous. "I was wondering if... You wanted to hang... At the park... With me. Next Friday?" He asks finally
I'm about to say the answer when Alexis comes over.
"There you are Cole! I've been looking all over for you!" She says with the highest and happiest voice ever. She sat right between us where we put our hands and while she was "distracting" Cole she shoved me off the bench and made me land on my butt. "Ohmygod!" I shout quickly and loudly as I land on my behind. "Oh my god Emily are you okay?!" Alexis asks with an obvious smirk.
"It's EMMA." I mutter making sure I spit on her.
Cole helps me up and Alexis' mom gets here as Cole helps me dust myself off. I can tell her mom is here because they have a megaphone and the principal starts yelling your name saying that your mom or dad is here."I'm really sorry Emily! Oh! Gotta go! Bye Cole! I'll see you later sweetie!" She says happily hopping into her moms car.
"I can't stand her!" I say realizing I said that out loud instead of in my head
"Me either..." Cole agrees. "So what's your answer?" He asks
"To what?" I say looking surprised.
He was asking you on a date you stupid, I thought.
"Oh... Um. Sure." I say blushing.
"I can't wait to see you there... I guess." he says shyly, once again taking my hand.
Then we just stand there underneath the old tree staring into each others' eyes.
His eyes are an icy cool blue that freezes me whenever I look at them...
I could stare into his eyes forever. He surprisingly stares into my brown/black eyes too. We both get lost in the moment and he starts leaning into me...
"EMMA WILLOWS! EMMA WILLOWS YOUR RIDE IS HERE! EMMA WILLOWS!" Shouts the principal.
Instantly we both open our eyes and both blush because we realized what would've happened if the principal didn't shout my name like crazy.
"I'll see you tomorrow..." I say.
I start heading towards the "cafe" area and go back to get my bag.
But before I leave with my bag I get on my tip-toes and give Cole a small kiss on the cheek...
